The number of people out of work in the island has fallen.

According to figures released today by the Treasury, there were 1,146 unemployed in the island at the end of February.

That’s a fall of 36 over the month.

It’s also lower than it was a year ago. There are 35 fewer out work compared with February last year.

The news comes a day after Barclays announced job losses in the island {http://www.iomtoday.co.im/news/business/barclays-to-cut-35-jobs-as-payment-processing-work-moves-off-island-1-6493100|as we reported yesterday.}

The deputy headteacher at Willaston School is to take over as head in September.

Rose Burton, who has een the school’s deputy head since 2009, will replace Keith Hardisty, who has headed the school since 1998 and who is retiring after 35 years in education.

Mrs Burton was born in Merseyside but moved to the Isle of Man shortly after and grew up in Port Erin.

She was educated at Rushen Primary School, Castle Rushen High School and The Buchan School.

Mrs Burton graduated from the Liverpool Institute of Higher Education in 1989 with a Bachelor of Education honours degree in English and drama.

She returned to the Isle of Man and took up her first post as a newly qualified teacher at Manor Park Primary School in Douglas.

She then moved to Victoria Road Primary School, Castletown, and was appointed as key stage one (educating children from five to seven) co-ordinator. =]#She continued her career in the same role at Ballacottier Primary School before being appointed deputy headteacher at Willaston. She gained her National Professional Qualification for Headship in 2012.

Mrs Burton said: ‘I really couldn’t be happier to be taking over the role of headteacher at Willaston School. I’m extremely proud to lead a school that has such warmth and character.

‘To lead a team of committed teachers, passionate parents and talented, enthusiastic children is an honour.’

Mrs Burton is married with a son, Charlie who is at Lancaster University. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family, visiting friends, walking and gardening.

Willaston School has 176 pupils on the register.

Nedbank Private Wealth is to sponsor the next eClub event at Bar George, Douglas, on Thursday, March 20.

The ever-popular social event offers the island’s eGaming community the chance to get together in a relaxed and convivial environment and enjoy drinks and canapés courtesy of host Nedbank Private Wealth.

Nedbank Private Wealth’s decision to sponsor the eClub event is a reflection of its commitment to the eGaming sector, as it can offer flexible and efficient banking solutions to support all aspects of eGaming financial management.

These include banking facilities in a wide range of currencies, a full range of treasury and asset management services, currency hedging services and continuity of service.

The eClub is a social meeting place for anyone involved in eGaming in the Isle of Man or those with an interest in the sector. The initiative was started by KPMG and Continent 8 Technologies to bring the growing number of people working in the sector together in one place and start building lasting relationships. As well as providing a social venue, the eClub party also gives colleagues and friends the opportunity to chat informally about ideas and issues within eGaming in the island.

This month’s eClub party opens from 5.30 pm onwards on Thursday, March 20 at Bar George.

For regular updates and to get involved in the eClub, visit www.facebook.com/IsleofManeClub or join the group ‘Isle of Man eClub’ on LinkedIn.

Young Farmers set to entertain

The Isle of Man Young Farmers Annual Concert has sold out all three nights of its Gaiety Theatre performances on tonight (Thursday), Friday and Saturday.

People have been known to start queuing at around 3am to make sure they get their favourite front row seats and this year seems to have been no different with the shows all selling out quickly, especially the final night.

Secretary of the Isle of Man Federation of Young Farmers Clubs, Angela Teare, said: ‘It has sold out again, which is great.

‘There was a large queue as the Welcome Centre opened and tickets for the Saturday night sold out during the first day on sale with the other two nights selling out soon after.’

Angela said that rehearsals for the concerts are going really well.

‘I think by now, the four clubs are rehearsing every night in a bid to get their show just right,’ said Angela.

‘I can’t really reveal any plans, but that’s because I don’t really know them!

‘The clubs rehearse but tell no-one apart from their own club members what they are doing, some don’t even tell their family, for fear of another club finding out and stealing their idea.’

The hugely popular concert, sponsored by the Isle of Man Bank, is now in its 43rd year.

There are four Young Farmers’ clubs in the island – Central, Eastern, Northern and Southern – and all take part in the concert over the three nights.

All four clubs will perform a show lasting around 35 minutes on each of the three nights.

The performances are judged by different judges on each night and on the Saturday night the scores are totalled up to decide who wins the Marketing Society Cup.

Southern Young Farmers will be aiming to win the event for the 11th time in a row at this year’s event.

Angela said: ‘I can tell you that the dancing will be up to its usual high standard, both lads and girls have been practising hard.

‘Far too many male Young Farmers will don their bikinis, skimpy dresses, push up bras and stilettos – all in the name of entertainment and have a brilliant time, and of course the sketches, taking digs at local events and politicians will be great as well.’

Isle of Man Bank managing director Bill Shimmins is joining the judging panel on the Saturday night.

Mr Shimmins said: ‘The Isle of Man Bank is delighted to sponsor this incredibly popular show in support of two very worthwhile causes.

‘This year marks the 30th year that the Isle of Man Bank has sponsored the Young Farmers Concert and we expect it to be another three nights of great entertainment.

‘The action-packed night of hilarious tomfoolery has come a long way since it first started, and the performers and back stage teams have been working hard ahead of the show. I wish all involved the best of luck.’

Anyone between the ages of 10 and 36 can become a member of the Young Farmers.

The Isle of Man Young Farmers is the island’s leading youth movement.

It is an organisation that enables young people to meet, participate in activities, both socially and competitive, with the opportunity to travel, both nationally and internationally.

Barclays Wealth and Investment Management has celebrated significant career landmarks of 19 employees in the Isle of Man.

It includes Peter Last, who achieved 40 years of service in 2013.

Mr Last said: ‘I have seen many changes, including the growth of our teams.

‘Throughout it all, Barclays Wealth and Investment Management has remained an exciting place to work, with many interesting opportunities available.

‘One thing that hasn’t changed in the 40 years I have been with the bank is our focus on customers; our customers and clients have remained at the centre of everything we do, and I am proud of the part I have played in achieving and maintaining this focus.’

In this week’s Manx Independent we reveal evidence that Tony Blair has Manx roots.

And his ancestor had a shady reputation.

On page one, we report on a Manxman who’s been on the barricade in Kiev.

Inside, we have the latest situation on Peel Road.

Other stories include:

>A new private school in Douglas

>Potential problems for Laxey Glen Mills

>The education minister comes under fire in Keys

>The Post Office is scrapping cheaper stamps for delivering letters within the island

>After Buddy Rocks flopped, the Courthouse is having another revamp

>Peter Karran talks to us about not being given a departmental job

The Manx Independent also has our features section, Island Life, two pages of What’s On and 12 pages of sports action.

The paper has been delayed by fog as the Ben-my-Chree has not been able to sail.

Apologies for that.

Our wholesalers, GE White, will deliver them to the shops that are still open (including supermarkets, garages, Spar stores and so on) as soon as they can.

The paper will be on sale in all newsagents tomorrow.
