Isle of Man Sport Aid and Cavendish Scholarship recipient Charlotte Atkinson was in record-breaking form as she competed at the Nice International Long Course Meet in France last weekend.

The swimming event is extremely popular, attracting a large number of competitors including world stars.

The Commonwealth Games hopeful had a very busy schedule over the weekend but her hard work in training paid off as she produced impressive times in a number of events.

In the 100 metre butterfly event, Charlotte swam a massive personal best to claim the bronze medal and set a new senior island record time of 1:00.52.

Charlotte was just 1.14 seconds behind the winner, Hungarian and European Swimmer of the Year Katinka Hosszu, and French reigning Olympic Champion Camille Muffat.

Her swim was so fast that her 50m split time in the final was a new senior island record, beating her own previous best by 0.12.

In the 200m butterfly race, Charlotte finished in fourth place, with the race again being won by 2013 World Championships bronze medalist Hosszu.

Charlotte also reached the final of the 50m butterfly, finishing in sixth position, just two places behind her Plymouth team-mate and Olympic breaststroke champion Ruta Meilutyte.

Her time of 27.78 was another new senior island record, beating her previous time for the 100m final.

Atkinson then competed in the 50m freestyle, 200m individual medley and 400m individual medley, achieving Glasgow Commonwealth Games consideration times in the latter two events.

During the course of the event, Charlotte achieved 11 such times and set four new senior island records.

She is now ranked number one in Great Britain in her age group for the 100m butterfly and 200m butterfly races, in both long course and short course swimming pools.

‘It was a brilliant weekend,’ enthused the Manx swimmer. ‘I have gained so much experience competing at this level against Olympic and world champions.

‘There were almost 70 teams competing from many different countries, so it was great for me to win a bronze medal.

‘The support from home was amazing, so big thanks to everyone, Isle of Man Swimming Club, Isle of Man Sport, Mark Cavendish and the Gubay Chase Your Dream Award.’
