All Saints Brownies in Douglas celebrated their 70th birthday by having a sleepover in Port Erin Guide and Scout Headquarters.

All Saints Brownies were joined by fellow brownies from Anagh Coar Brownies to complete their world culture interest badge in celebration of their birthday. The brownies had a special guest on their sleepover, Jessi-Lee Stewart, a guider from Australia who taught the girls about life in Australia.

To complete their world culture badge, the brownies made traditional crafts and food from Australia.

They also had to teach Jessi-Lee about life on the Isle of Man; they completed this by learning and demonstrating Manx dancing, making bonnag and designing a poster about life on the Isle of Man.

Jessi-Lee said: ‘By taking part with the 70th birthday celebration sleepover, I have been able to experience the Manx culture from all members of the community.

‘The Isle of Man is an amazing place and I can’t wait to share my experiences with my girl guides but also my community at home.’

Leader of All Saints Brownies, Clare Kelly said: ‘We felt that our 70th birthday sleepover was a good opportunity to celebrate guiding around the world and we were excited that Jessi-Lee could be with us to allow us to learn first hand about what it is like to live in Australia.

‘It was also fascinating to listen to the girls talk about the Isle of Man and why they love living here.

‘It is hard to imagine that our brownie unit has been operating for 70 years – I imagine that the activities that the girls now take part in differ from those completed when the unit first opened.’

Girlguiding UK is this month celebrating 100 years of the brownies.
