IT might have been chilly on the hands during Sunday’s four-man Am-Am at King Edward Bay but this proved no obstacle for Mikey Allison, Dave Dutton, A. Moore and Gary Raeside who clinched a hard-fought victory.
Some clutch putts down the closing stretch proved just enough for the fab four who pipped runners-up Mark Avery, Adam Caddick, Chris Murphy and Paul Smith.
To add to the drama, Adrian Copley, Peter Craig, Lee Harrison and Syd McKnight also fired a best-of-the-day 84 points but had to settle for third place on a day where the odd putt here and skinny wedge there made all the difference.
A honourable mention must also go to fourth-place finishers Dave Joughin, Kelvin McNicholl, Frank Nolan and Phil Watterson and fifth-best Roy Corlett, John Gilpin, Derek Moultrie and John Ronan who finished on 79 points.
The most birdied par-three on Sunday was the 12th with four twos; piece of cake, eh?
I didn’t realise 21-handicappers were in the business of making eagles but Emmet McQuilan is proving to be anything but the conventional category three player.
His 38 points were enough to end his four-week winless drought and give him his fourth victory since November.
A shaky finish meant it could have been even better for the now 20-handicapper but it was just enough to nudge the unlucky Ian Harrison (20) in to second place.
A birdie on the 2nd got the runner-up off to a flyer but nasty five down the last would have taken the taste out of his dinner.
Nothing worse than a bogey on the card for third-placed Michael Alderman who, along with the other 32 competitors, must have teed off well before the snowstorms, gales and thunder and lightning set in during the afternoon.
Let’s hope that doesn’t happen tomorrow (Saturday) for the open stableford or on Sunday for the always eventful two-man Texas scramble comp.
