Parents will have the chance to look around and drop-in on lessons at Dhoon Primary School to find out more about what the school has to offer.

Discover Day @ Dhoon will allow parents, family members and friends to walk around the building, see what goes on in lessons, look through books, see how children learn and enjoy educational displays.

The new event will take place next Thursday (February 25) at the school in Maughold from 2pm to 5pm.

As well as finding out more about the work of the school, guests will have the opportunity to visit a variety of stalls from organisations such as The Children’s Centre, Morrells Handwriting Company, St John Ambulance and Ramsey Grammar School.

Police officers will also be on hand to discuss road safety, the Computer Bus will highlight the IT facilities available to students and representatives from the school’s meal service will be there to answer any questions about the menu offered.

Dhoon Church, Manx Telecom and Isle of Man charity Scripture Union Ministries Trust will also have stalls.

Headteacher Max Kelly said the event had been organised after feedback from parents suggested they would like to find out more about what goes in lessons. ‘It promises to be a fabulous event and I really do hope that it will be well supported by everyone,’ he said.

‘There is no need to notify the school of your intention to attend – just turn up and you will be very welcome!’

In addition, guests are invited to attend special presentations given by Sue Smits from Morrells Handwriting Company, Julie Wilsdon, an ICT advisory teacher from the Department of Education and Children, and Gary McManus, the Children’s Services and Safeguarding Board’s lead officer.

The first presentation will be given by Morrells at 3.45pm and will explain the importance of good handwriting, how pupils are supported in school and how they can be supported at home.

At 4.15pm, Julie Wilsdon will discuss internet access and mobile phone use and will give advice on how to keep children safe online.

The final presentation, beginning at 4.45pm, will be led by Gary McManus and will focus on the government’s Strategy for Children and Young People 2015-2020, which was approved by Tynwald last March and aims to ensure all children have the best opportunities in the island.

Parents should take their seats at 3.30pm and children are welcome to attend, however there will be a supervised DVD screening in one of the classrooms for any children who would prefer to watch a film.

Music will be provided throughout the afternoon by Dhoon School’s musicians and refreshments will be available.

Hogg motorsport service supporters recognised

The Ascot Hotel in Douglas was the venue for the glitz and glamour of the annual Hoggies Awards ceremony.

Around 100 people attended the event which is to recognise the unpaid contributions of the many volunteers who support motorsport in the Isle of Man and the Hogg Rescue medical support teams in particular.

Seven awards were made, inimitably compered by Dr David Stevens, medical director for Isle of Man motorsport medical services.

The first award, the National, went to Richard Ashton who set up Calder Rescue 25 years ago. Calder Rescue is a licensed Motor Sport Association rescue unit.

Dr Stevens said: ‘This award is not only for his dedication over a quarter of a century but also for running his popular training sessions for those involved in rallying, covering first-on-scene training.

‘These awards are voted on by the Hogg crews along with a few suggestions by myself, then I bought a job lot of trophies from the pound shop. The small ones are gold plated,’ he joked.

Next on the agenda was the Local Award which went to Nigel and Kevin Minay who have provided cars and a venue for people to train in removing casualties from damaged cars.

‘This is an essential element of training for all the Motor Sport Association licensed crew members,’ Dr Stevens said.

The Crew Award was given this year to Christian Mourant, who Dr Stevens said was one of four new crew members taken on by Hogg Motorsport late in 2014.

‘What makes Christian stand out is he does not yet have a driving licence and despite living in Peel has always managed to travel, usually by bus, to Hogg monthly business and training evenings and to the garage to start a duty,’ Dr Stevens said.

The Travelling Marshal Award went to chief travelling marshal Tony Duncan who Dr Stevens said had contrubuted ‘invaluable work with his six travelling marshal colleagues’.

Welfare officer Wyn Evans received the Special Award for her work with injured riders and their families and with the ACU Benevolent Fund.

Fundraising award went to Ros Gale, who with Tim Edwards raised over £2,000. The Donations Award went to Keith Dalrymple who provided £4,000 on behalf of the Freemasons’ Grand Charity.

Castletown commissioners record ‘no comment’ on Callow’s Yard plan

Castletown Commissioners have declined to comment on a plan to convert a function room in Callow’s Yard into four apartments.

Clerk Eddie Convery pointed out at Monday’s meeting the plan (16/00119/B) had ‘no parking provision’.

Andrew Thomas said: ‘We have opposed planning applications in the past because of limited parking – we should do it again.’

Colin Leather pointed out that when they did so ‘we have got in trouble [with planners] in the past’.

Mr Thomas replied: ‘Are you saying we should not do it because of that? We should write and say there should be parking.’

Mr Leather proposed they do not object to the plan, but there was no seconder.

Mr Thomas proposed recommending planners turn it down because of lack of parking. He was seconded by David Parnell and supported by Dorothy Faragher and Kevin Weir.

As the vote was split, the final decision was made by commissioners’ chairman Alwyn Collister who said they should make ‘no comment’.

Permission was granted last month to a Callow’s Yard plan (15/01286/B) to make two retail units out of one and convert the rear from retail to residential use at 17 and 19 Malew Street. A series of plans to convert Callow’s Yard from retail to residential use in 2014 provoked concerns they would ‘fundamentally alter’ the town.

Cyber security is challenge facing small businesses

Isle of Man Chamber of Commerce hosted a workshop about cyber security attended by members of the island’s biggest business network.

Cyber security for the board was aimed primarily at board members, owners and managers from small businesses and looked at their responsibilities in relation to the security of the information their businesses hold.

It began with a presentation by Chris Gledhill, managing director of software development company PDMS, who explained the importance of cyber security for all businesses – and how lapses in security risked incurring financial losses, disruption of services, loss of confidential data about a company and clients, and damage to a company’s reputation.

He went on to look at the type of individuals who could pose a cyber security threat, what form this threat could take, and its potential impact.

Cutting through IT jargon, Mr Gledhill then explained simple steps which could be taken to make information security part of normal business risk management procedures.

This led on to a summary of how to implement these procedures, and how to respond to any changes or problems – including actual cyber-attacks.

His presentation concluded with a few simple questions which members of the audience could ask their respective in-house IT teams, or outsourced IT providers, to inform decision making at board level.

Jane Dellar, Isle of Man Chamber of Commerce chief executive, thanked Mr Gledhill for the presentation, and members who attended the workshop.

She said: ‘With high profile breaches in cyber security regularly hitting the headlines, many experts believe that 2016 will be a watershed year in the evolution of cyber security as a core business competence.

‘This presents a huge challenge, especially for small businesses, which is why Chamber organised this event specifically for members at board level to inform their decision making about IT policies.

Chris’s presentation was excellent in explaining the major issues, and this event once again showed the tremendous value of Chamber membership by providing access to expert advice which may otherwise not be available to some small businesses.”

The cyber security CPD Workshop was held at Chamber’s offices in Athol Street, Douglas. It is just one of a series of events which Chamber has planned for members this year.

Upcoming events include a road traffic bill consultation meeting on February 2, and on February 16 there’s a luncheon at the Claremont Hotel about the potential impact of the European General Data Protection Regulation.

To celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, Chamber will be hosting a luncheon at the Claremont Hotel to debate gender parity in the Isle of Man.

All these events are exclusively for Isle of Man Chamber of Commerce members.

Some big games as league seasons resume

After a two-week half-term break hockey is back with a bang this Saturday with a host of mouthwatering fixtures.

Game of the day is perhaps the first serious test of PwC Men’s Premier Division leaders Valkyrs’ title credentials, against Neil Crowe’s Vikings side. This one is too close to call - a Valkyrs’ win would set up an enormous game against Bacchas A next week, whereas a Vikings victory would drag them straight back into the title race.

Bacchas face a Ramsey side seeking their first win, and after putting seven past them in the cup two weeks ago should take both points on offer.

Castletown play their cup conquerors Bacchas B in a key game at the other end of the division. Should the southern club gain revenge they will be confident of retaining their place in the top division.

In the PwC Women’s Premier, the key game is between champions Vikings and a Valkyrs side with something to prove. Having lost to Bacchas and Ramsey, the westerners will view this as an opportunity to really test Kim Carney’s illustrious Vikings.

An ever-improving Ramsey should have too much for a stubborn Castletown side, while Bacchas A should beat their own second team to keep pace at the top.

In Men’s Division One, leaders Harlequins and Vikings B will be looking to set up a massive game next week with victories over Saracens and Vikings Colts respectively. Quins have the tougher assignment against Andrew Winstanley’s southern team, but should claim the points.

Ramsey B will also be looking to leapfrog Bacchas Colts out of immediate relegation danger.

The quest for promotion steps up in the women’s Division One with both undefeated sides meeting in Ramsey. The hosts are playing a free-scoring Vikings B in a game which could go either way.

It’s also tight at the bottom, with Valkyrs B and Saracens meeting to try to claim their first points. Both sides have flattered to deceive this season, so will be looking to turn their fortunes round.

Neil Shimmin’s Valkyrs B march on in the PwC Men’s Division Two, and should be too strong for a Bacchas side they put five past earlier in the season. Harlequins B will also be seeking redemption against Mark Bratt’s Castletown B side.

A close game in prospect in PwC Women’s Division Two between Quins B and Bacchas C. It’s a game which Louise Franklin’s Bacchas can ill afford to lose, as it would be a major blow to their title aspirations, especially if league leaders Valkyrs C emerge victorious against Castletown B.

The series of acoustic shows taking place at The Outback in Douglas continues its run tomorrow night (Friday) with a set from Peel based singer/songwriter Alex Harris between 7pm and 9.30pm.

Having arrived on the island in October 2009 he’s been fairly prolific in both his solo and group guises, which have included his bands, Native, and The Alex Harris Trio and also running the Isle of Man music website, Gigmann (http://www.gigmann.com).

He even has time now and again to throw in a few covers gigs of which this Friday is one. It’s also sure to include classic and contemporary pop, rock and soul covers.

For more information on Alex and his comings and goings, pay a visit to www.facebook.com/alexharrismusic

Across town and also on Friday night, Jaks Bar, in Douglas, plays host to veterans of the Isle of Man music scene in the shape of rock and indie covers band Switch.

Originally formed back in 2007, their line-up is made up by Neil Curphey on vocals, Colin Davidson and Matt Quine on guitars, Mal Atkinson on bass and Jonny Peacock on drums.

The band plays a set that swings from the likes of The Killers, Doves, The Stone Roses, Ash, Feeder, The Kaiser Chiefs, Pulp and Blur at one end via Blondie and The Buzzcocks to INXS, Duran Duran, The Jam and The Sex Pistols at the other, so there’s quite a mix in there.

For more information on the band, visit www.facebook.com/SwitchIOM

If you wish to re-visit the bar the following night, you’ll find Jaks regular Ian Thompson in attendance.

Also known for his original material, Ian’s covers gigs with his trio boasts a set made up of songs from the likes of The Kinks, David Bowie, The Beatles and the like.

Well worth a look in if you’re in the area.

If that’s not enough for you then you’ll need to get yourself along to Noa Bakehouse in Douglas on Saturday night from 7pm for a free event that features live sets from The Shads and The Fecktones.

Ballagroove Records very own Gypo Buggane will also be spinning some funk tunes and whatever other gems he can find throughout the night!

The event is also being used as a promo night for the forthcoming three day Dark Horse Arts and Music festival to be held in the island in July.

More news on that event as I have it.

Nomads can take big step toward title with win over neighbours Town

$

PDMS Southern Nomads will take a big step towards retaining the Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield on Saturday when they play neighbours Castletown at Poulsom Park.

With two games between the sides outstanding the clubs have agreed to play for double points to aid the fixture backlog. With a maximum of six points on offer, a win for Nomads will put them in a very strong position at the top of the Shield table.

Apart from a blip against Ramsey B a few weeks back, Nomads have been the form team this season

Town put up a brave showing against Vagabonds B last Saturday but will need all that and more this weekend. Some good news for them though is that skipper Matt Quine’s knee injury is not as serious as first thought and while he will be out for the remainder of the season, his prospects for recovery are good and we all hope to see him back again next season.

There are still two sides capable of upsetting the Nomads’ challenge; Ramsey B and Vagabonds B.

Vagas travel to Port-e-Chee to take on Douglas B and they need a win to keep in the hunt.

They were in pretty solid form last week with Johnny Beckley and Mark Howarth scoring seven tries between them. A win against Douglas will mean Vagas face Nomads on March 12 needing a win to deny Nomads the title, assuming of course the latter beat Castletown.

Ramsey B travel to King William’s College to face Noa Nomads. The Ramsey side will be a little weaker than usual with some injury worries leaving skipper James Wren a little short handed. As with Vagas B, Ramsey need to win all their remaining games, but crucially they also need Vagas to beat Nomads on March 12 which makes the Ramsey challenge an outside one.

Saturday’s fixtures

South Lancashire/Cheshire Division One

Douglas v Northwich @ Port-e-Chee ko 2.15pm

Cheshire (South)

Vagabonds v Knutsford @ Ballafletcher ko 2.15pm

Ramsey v Linley @ Mooragh Park ko 2.15pm

Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield all ko @ 2.15pm

Castletown v PDMS Southern Nomads @ Poulsom Park

Douglas B v Vagabonds B @ Port-e-Chee

Noa Nomads v Ramsey B @ King William’s College

There is a mixure of league and cup football on offer for JCK Division Two sides this weekend.

Eight sides are all in GH Corlett Woods Cup action - half in the preliminary round and the other half in the quarter-finals - while there are also two league fixtures taking place.

There is a tasty-looking clash on offer in the prelim round at Ballafletcher where Douglas Royal host double-chasing Douglas Athletic.

The latter are nine points clear at the top of the Division Two table and well on course for promotion, but Royal could provide a tricky test of their aspirations of a league and cup double.

The other prelim round tie sees Michael United visit an in-form Braddan side looking for a fourth successive win. While league position suggests a win for the Swans, the Aces are in a decent run of form themselves and could cause an upset.

An interesting battle could unfold in the quarter-finals between Douglas and District v Onchan at Noble’s Park where the hosts’ first team aims to reach a semi-final for the first time in the club’s history.

The other quarter sees Foxdale make the short trip south to take on Castletown at The Stadium where the hosts will be expected to progress.

In JCK Division Two, Governor’s Athletic host Gymns and Pulrose United visit Malew at Clagh Vane.

Johnson back on Triumph for TT

Gary Johnson will be back on a Triumph for this year’s Supersport TT, a brand he has previously enjoyed success with in the event.

British Supersport Cup champions Team T3 Racing will be supplying and preparing the Daytona 675 triple for the Lincolnshire ace, a two-time Supersport TT winner.

Johnson’s last victory came in 2014 aboard a Triumph Daytona, so Team T3 Racing are setting their sights firmly on securing their debut podium around the iconic Mountain Course.

Clearly enthused to be back on a Triumph, Johnson commented: ‘I’m really excited about this new venture and getting involved with a new team, particularly one with T3’s experience.

‘It’s great to be back on a Triumph 675 as I have a wealth of knowledge on the bike and I hope to replicate the success of 2014 this year. I’m eager to get going as we have a busy testing schedule ahead to be fully prepared for first practice in June.’

Team T3 Racing’s principal, Andy Jenkinson, added: ‘We are thrilled that Gary is riding our bike this year. Having accumulated more than 15 years of racing experience with Aston Martin, as a champion racing driver, I have worked with the A1 GP, BTCC, British GT and Heritage as promoters and sponsors.

‘I understand the challenges in putting together a winning team and I believe Gary and Tony Scott are crucial to our success. As proven race winners, they are capable of putting us in a strong position to challenge for the win.’

As managing director of Team T3 Racing, Scott had this to say: ‘We had our first outing at the TT in 2013 with Dave Johnson who put in two great performances on what was a stock 675, placing as top finishing Triumph that year.

‘This gave us a taste for the event but we have been waiting for the right rider to take our bike to the podium. We believe Gary is that guy and are heading into the event this year confident of success.’

Rob Callister to seek re-election in Onchan

Onchan Commissioner Rob Callister has announced his intention to seek re-election in the local authority general election in April.

Mr Callister has been an Onchan commissioner since 2012 and will stand for re-election on April 28.

He said: ‘Over the four years I genuinely believe I have served the authority and the ratepayers to the best of my abilities. I feel it is important that Onchan constituents are given an opportunity to elect a Board of Commissioners with the energy, enthusiasm and drive, along with the right level of business acumen to fully represent the authority and ratepayers for the next four years.

‘As an individual commissioner, I have not been afraid to go beyond the comfort of the boardroom in order to research topics or to keep constituents fully informed or to put pressure on Government departments when additional costs to be transferred onto the authority do not stand up to further scrutiny. If re-elected I will continue to serve the whole of the Onchan Community without “fear or favour” towards individuals, government and the local authority.’

The deadline to register to vote or stand as a candidate is March 18.

The Mount Murray Hotel and Country Club has been sold, it was confirmed today.

Isle of Man-based Comis Holdings has announced plans for a ‘world class’ hotel and leisure development after a deal to purchase the complex was finalised.

The purchase was completed late on Thursday afternoon following the licensing court decision to grant the appropriate licence.

First phases of work to refurbish the hotel, which closed following a fire in 2013, should begin within weeks.

The development will be known as COMIS at Mount Murray.

From the iomtoday archives, including video and pictures: Fire at Mount Murray Hotel: Only one injury

A Comis Holdings director said: ‘The Isle of Man needs more high quality hotel accommodation, both to grow the visitor economy and provide businesses with a venue where they can be proud to host guests.

‘There is also a demand among island residents for the amenities of a world-class development that COMIS at Mount Murray intend to provide.

‘Our vision is to provide superior hotel accommodation and facilities in a picturesque setting which can be enjoyed by visitors and locals, as well as a “destination” venue for occasions ranging from business conferences to large-scale tourism events. There is huge potential.’

The golf club itself remains open and Comis Holdings plan to reopen the restaurant in the coming weeks – a further announcement will be made in due course.

Comis Holdings was formed last year specifically to negotiate the purchase and redevelopment of the former Mount Murray Hotel and Country Club.

Proverbial six-pointer at Crosby as Ramsey visit

There’s a big game in store at the foot of the Canada Life Premier League on Saturday.

That is, of course, if the forecast wet weather for the end of the week doesn’t add to the 191 senior fixtures that have already been postponed so far this season.

If the pitches remain playable, taking top billing in the top flight should be the game at the foot of the standings between Marown and Ramsey.

The latter currently occupy the division’s second relegation spot, but only on goal difference with Union Mills, Ayre and the weekend’s opponents also on 12 points.

The scramble to avoid Division Two football next term looks set to run until the season’s conclusion, but three points on Saturday would give the victor a welcome shot in the arm ahead of the final run-in.

Ramsey, who have won two of their last three league outings, will start the encounter as slight favourites against a Marown side that has lost their last seven on the spin.

Mills and Ayre will do well to put distance between themselves and the league’s trap door.

The Millers face DHSOB at a venue yet to be confirmed, with the latter keen to bounce back from last week’s 8-0 FA Cup reverse at the hands of St George’s.

Ayre host Rushen in Andreas, the third-placed Spaniards aiming to build on last weekend’s 3-1 win at Ramsey.

With Peel scheduled to be in Paddy Power FA Cup action against St John’s, league leaders St George’s can stretch their advantage to nine points at the head of the standings if they beat Laxey.

The reverse fixture ended 9-0 in Geordies, but expect this one at Glencrutchery Road to be a lot closer.

Bottom side RYCOB currently trail safety by seven points and need to start picking up some results if they are to avoid being cut adrift. A tough trip to St Mary’s is on the agenda for Youthie this week.

Div Two duo in latest TotW

$

The latest Isle of Man Newspapers’ Team of the Week welcomes a couple of Division Two players into the mix after their impressive showings in the FA Cup at the weekend.

On a rare weekend of decent weather, five games managed to go ahead in the annual cup competition, with no fewer than 23 goals being scored amongst them.

Therefore it’s no surprise to see an attacking 4-3-3 formation being deployed by Eric Clague’s esteemed ratings panel in the latest hypothetical XI.

Donning the goalkeeper gloves this week is Ayre United custodian Daniel Kelly who kept a clean sheet for the Tangerines as the northerners saw off the spirited challenge of Division Two outfit Colby in Andreas.

One of the other stars of that match was Jamie Callister who shone in the heart of the defence for Ayre, producing a man-of-the-match performance and even helping himself to a goal.

Slotting in alongside Callister in a four-man backline are Johnny Myers and Jonny Shields, as well as one of the aforementioned second division shining lights, James Halliday.

The latter was one of Douglas Royal’s standout performers as the Whites defeated fellow Division Two side Foxdale 2-0 at Ballafletcher and therefore earns a rare - possibly a first - TotW call-up.

Myers and Shields are more familiar names in the Team of the Week fold and they were in typically impressive form for St George’s and Laxey respectively.

Myers produced a fine display at right-back for the defending champions, nullifying the DHSOB attack and showcasing his range of passing throughout.

Likewise Shields was an impressive performer for the Miners as they defeated a battling Douglas Athletic at Glen Road 3-1, even having a hand in one his side’s goals.

Two thirds of the three-man midfield is made up of players from RYCOB, namely Matty Boyd and John Lund. The northerners were involved in an epic seven-goal thriller at Scoill ree Gorree where Youthie triumphed 4-3 against Michael United but only after the westerners had come from three goals down to draw level.

Boyd and Lund both shone in the middle of the park and each managed to grab a vital goal for their side to ensure the northerners booked their place in the next round.

Completing the Team of the Week midfield trio is the second Division Two player in this week’s line-up in the shape of Adam Pate.

Like his Douglas Royal team-mate Halliday, Pate was instrumental in the Ballafletcher side’s 2-0 win over Foxdale and caught the eye of Eric Clague’s ratings panel to earn a place in the XI.

The Team of the Week frontline boasts no fewer than six goals between them from the weekend, led by Ciaran McNulty.

The St George’s striker was in sublime form as the Grand Slam-chasing Saints brushed aside 10-man Old Boys at Glencrutchery Road, McNulty helping himself to a well-taken hat-trick as well as having a hand in three other goals as he was named man of the match in an 8-0 victory.

Also getting on the scoresheet in that game was Chris Bass Jr who tormented the DHSOB defence and, as well as his strike which made it 3-0 in first-half injury time, the winger also played a part in two other goals.

Completing the latest Team of the Week is Michael Fernandes who starred for Laxey in their aforementioned win over Douglas Athletic. Despite having a penalty saved by Pinks goalkeeper Matthew Quirk, ex-Ramsey man Fernandes proved the difference between the two sides as he helped himself to two goals at Glen Road and thus earns his place in TotW.

Claiming the refereeing honours this week is one of the island up-and-coming officials, Matty Shaw, who impressed with the whistle in the middle of the latter match at Glen Road between Laxey and Douglas Athletic.

Island games firm announces its new title

$

Gamesco, said to be the first video game publisher to be founded and based in the Isle of Man, has announced its first title.

The newly formed PC and console publisher is based in Douglas.

The game is based on a hugely popular American television drama series from NBC called Grimm.

Set to launch as an online-only, free-to-play title in mid-2016, Grimm: Dark Legacy will take place several hundred years before the TV show’s contemporary setting and challenges players to survive as a Grimm ancestor in the Old World.

The title is licensed by Universal Partnerships & Licensing and is currently under development by Norwegian developer Artplant, creator of the hit title Battlestar Galactica Online.

Currently airing for a fifth season on NBC, Grimm is a drama series inspired by the classic Grimm Brothers’ Fairy Tales.

Portland homicide detective Nick Burkhardt (played by David Giuntoli) discovers he’s descended from an elite line of criminal profilers known as Grimms, charged with keeping balance between humanity and the mythological creatures of the world. After his discovery he increasingly finds his responsibilities as a detective at odds with his new responsibilities as a Grimm.

Played exclusively online, Grimm: Dark Legacy will draw heavily upon the rich heritage of the TV series, fusing together tactical survival combat, exploration, mission-based gameplay and co-operative multiplayer experiences.

The game will encourage players to explore the expansive Old World while completing different types of missions to win rewards, transform themselves and their equipment and become formidable Grimm hunters.

Combat will also be integral to the gameplay with gamers having to fend off ferocious Wesen attacks by equipping a wide variety of weapons similar to the ones that Nick wields in the series.

Rob Ollett, chief executive officer of Gamesco said: ‘The richness of the Grimm universe lends itself perfectly to becoming an incredible gaming experience and it’s an honour to be able to make this a reality.

‘Creating a game based on the Grimm TV series is a perfect demonstration of our ambitions as a new type of networked video game publisher, matchmaking the great development talent at Artplant with this rich and creative license from Universal Partnerships & Licensing.’

The company is backed by big industry veterans: the founder is Rob Ollett, previously at big video game studios Jagex and Bigpoint International.

Gamesco chief operating officer Kelly Lee has more than 15 years in the games industry and was also at Jagex and Bigpoint International.

When Business News first disclosed Gamesco’s arrival last November Economic Development minister Laurence Skelly MHK, said: ‘For Gamesco to be the first videogames company here is really exciting.

‘The island is an ideal operational base, given its status as an international hub for eGaming’.

GPs gather for latest training session

GPs will not be available to take appointments on Wednesday afternoon as they will be taking part in the latest quarterly education session.

The sessions enable GPs to discuss developments in medical care and best practice, and to examine ways to enhance care for patients in the Isle of Man.

Services will continue to be provided, however, and wnyone who needs to see a doctor urgently should ring their practice as normal.

Locum GPs based at practices in Douglas, Peel and the south will attend to urgent appointments and visits across the island.

Practices will remain open during the afternoon for patients to visit the practice nurse, collect test results, make future appointments and order repeat prescriptions.

Patients are reminded that they can register for GP online services by attending their practice with photographic identification such as their passport or driving licence and address confirmation such as a utility bill.

GP online services will help patients to view, book and cancel routine appointments, order repeat prescriptions and update their address details, through the GP practice website or via the mobile app.

The Department of Health and Social Care, along with the island’s GPs, appreciate the public’s support and understanding during these ongoing education sessions.

Shoprite and Isle of Man Meats join forces to promote Manx lamb

Shoprite and Isle of Man Meats have teamed up with local farmers to launch an on-island marketing campaign to promote Manx lamb.

Shoprite is running a campaign on its Ballacushag Farms Manx lamb throughout February which will offer consumers a third off all cuts of Manx lamb, some of which form part of the fresh ‘Super Six’ offer in-store.

The lamb is available from the local meat shelves in Shoprite stores. Isle of Man Meats has packed the lamb cuts in new ‘cryovac’ packaging, which gives the meat a longer shelf life.

Andrew Thomas, chief executive of Shoprite, said: ‘It is critical to the sustainability of Manx farming, as well as maintaining a balanced economy, that we actively support local farmers. As the Isle of Man’s leading local food retailer we understand the importance of supporting the island’s farmers and we hope that this campaign will promote the benefits of buying locally-reared lamb.

‘As well as the benefits of traceability with locally-reared meat, Isle of Man lamb is renowned as one of the world’s best in terms of taste and texture.’

Talented acts go head-to-head in The Next Big Thing

Fifteen young acts will go head to head on Saturday in The Next Big Thing grand final.

Junior Achievement’s flagship event takes place at the Gaiety Theatre, with singer/songwriter Jack Morlen as guest judge.

The charity’s chief executive, Sue Cook, said: ‘Throughout November we auditioned more than 100 young people who applied to enter this year’s competition.

‘The result is that we have a fantastic final with a range of singers covering all different genres including rock, pop, swing and musicals.

‘Joining them on stage will be bands, accomplished musicians and range of talented dancers. I think this final will be the best yet.’

Hilltop Hallucinations had only been playing together for nine months before entering the competition. They are all members of Soundcheck and formed as a prom band.

Shanya Pickett was secretly entered into The Next Big Thing by her mum.

She said her musical inspiration comes from her primary school teacher, John Rhodes, and from her Poppa Jones who played in a band.

Amy Gravestock discovered her talent after winning the Xmas Factor at school.

This year’s Post TT Road Races have secured a new title sponsor for the 2016 event.

Organisers Southern 100 Racing have announced that Radcliffe Butchers of Castletown have taken on the role of main sponsor for the popular event which has brought the curtain down on the TT Races since 1991.

Chris Lennon, managing director of the butchers, said: ‘When I heard that the club were looking for a sponsor for the Post TT Races, it was an opportunity to continue Radcliffe’s association and support for the Southern 100 Racing organisation.

‘It’s good to put something back into the club and the local community as they have both been good to me over the years.’

Radcliffe Butchers are based in Malew Street, Castletown and serve the Isle of Man with their meat, delicatessen and fish products to retail customers and restaurants.

S100 club president Derek Nicholson commented: ‘Sponsorship is a vital element to Southern 100 Racing’s continued success and we are greatly indebted to Chris Lennon and Radcliffe Butchers for their generous support of the Post TT Road Races.’

Chris Lennon is no stranger to the Billown events, having been a long-time sponsor of former racer Chris Palmer, now the club’s riders’ liaison officer, and more recently young, upcoming Yorkshire rider James Cowton who has already tasted success at the ‘friendly races’ and will be one of the riders to watch around the 4.25-mile course this year at all three meetings.

Building lessons for these school children

Pupils at Andreas School pupils have been learning about construction and safety on building sites.

Health and safety advisor Grant Howard and contracts manager Len Arnold, who work for building firm Dandara, were invited to talk to a group of 26 children.

The pupils, aged between eight and 10, have been learning about construction, including designing homes and building model structures.

They have tested the strength and durability of their models, and have also been learning about real building sites.

Headteacher Rachel Ashley felt that the youngsters would benefit from hearing from people actually involved in the construction industry.

She said: ‘The Dolphins class, a mix of Year 4 and 5 pupils, has been working on the topic of construction, which has involved looking at different materials, building their own structures and bridges, testing them for strength, and designing their own dream houses. We wanted them to have a chance to talk to people who are in the business of construction so they could ask their own questions and develop an understanding of the importance of health and safety, especially around building sites.

‘The talk not only helped with the lessons, but was also really valuable in explaining why building sites can be dangerous places.’

Dandara Group staff often deliver presentations to community groups, including giving safety talks to children.

The talk at Andreas School was based around a guide to building a school, from design to completion, and was concluded with a message about the importance of site safety.

Grant and Len brought along a range of demonstration safety equipment, which the pupils had fun trying out.

Grant said: ‘While the children were really interested in the subject, we also saw this as an opportunity to share one of our most important messages, which is about safety. We explained all the safety aspects of entering a building site, and never to do it without permission and supervision. There are lots of sites around the island, and they can be dangerous if not treated with respect, both by workers and visitors.

Len added: ‘We were delighted to have the opportunity to help the children with their topic of construction by explaining what is involved in creating a building, starting at the very beginning and taking them through the whole process. They had lots of really interesting questions and seemed to be really fascinated by the subject, and it may inspire construction as a career in the future.’

A budding Manx art student has been given a helping hand to achieve his dreams thanks to a charitable organisation.

Dean Wright, who is 19 and from Jurby, has been awarded a £500 bursary by the Isle of Man Decorative and Fine Arts Society (IoMDFAS).

The Isle of Man College stident said the recognition had cemented his ambition to attend university and will be crucial in helping him achieve this goal.

The IoMDFAS is a member of the National Decorative and Fine Arts Society, and aims to encourage an interest in the arts among young people.

This has been achieved by sponsoring a number of workshops for younger children around the island.

In 2010 it was decided to award a bursary, annually, to an Isle of Man sixth form or college student who intended to go on to study fine art or an art-related subject at a UK university. The society is pleased to have selected some worthy recipients who have gone on to achieve excellent results.
