Isle of Man suffer heavy defeat to Germany

The Isle of Man, representing England, suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Germany in their second UEFA Regions Cup match on Thursday.

Having defeated East, West and Central Scotland 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon thanks to goals from Josh Kelly and Ciaran McNulty, confidence was high among the Manx ranks.

However, they found themselves up against a strong Württemberg team representing Germany and fell behind to Martin Kleinschrodt’s 20th minute strike.

Marian Asch then doubled the lead 17 minutes later following an error by goalkeeper Max Thomas and left Steve Burns’s side trailing 2-0 at half-time.

Any hopes of a trademark Isle of Man comeback were soon snuffed out around the hour mark when the Germans socred twice in quick succession through a Jonas Wiest double in the 60th and 61st minutes. Matters could have been even worse for the island but for goalline clearances by Johnny Myers and Andrew Crennell.

The Men almost pulled a goal back in the 80th minute when Peel winger Lee Gale hit the post, but seconds later substitute Mario Marinić netted a fifth just moments after coming off the bench.

And to rub salt in the Isle of Man wounds, Asch grabbed his second five minutes later before Marinić did likewise to round off the scoring and complete a resounding 7-0 victory.

The island will now face hosts Slovakia in the final game this Saturday - report and photographs in Tuesday’s Isle of Man Examiner.

Royal warm up for Ballafletcher derby with victory against Peel

As the island continues to bask in this Indian summer, Douglas Royal’s cutting edge glistened like a ninja’s blade in the afternoon sun om Sunday.

This was clearly evident when the defending champions defeated Peel 6-2 in the Warehouse Fitness-sponsored Women’s League at Douglas Road to move joint top of the championship table to occupy familiar territory.

The westerners were yet again caught off-guard like the previous week, conceding a goal very early on.

With only three minutes played, Rebecca Cole’s free-kick was flicked into the path of Donna Shimmin who cut inside and raced towards goal before unleashing a powerful, dipping shot that goalkeeper Kayleigh Greggor got her hand to but couldn’t prevent from going into the net.

The match started to open out and the visitors’ lead was doubled 20 minutes later after Shimmin collected a throw-in and, after working a one-two with Becci Pate, guided her shot into the net.

A third was scored after a free-kick was awarded on the left.

Cole curved in her set-piece which was only half-cleared, Pate collected and drove the resulting shot through a crowd of players and into the bottom left.

Angela Waite went close with an effort which hit the crossbar, however she made sure by netting the Whites’ fourth on the approach to half-time.

Another half-clearance saw Waite being the recipient and she raced in unopposed before firing her shot into the bottom corner of the net.

After the break, the westerners got off to the worst possible start by conceding a penalty kick after the ball struck Sarah O’Reilly’s arm. Shimmin dispatched the resulting spot-kick.

Fortunes did start to improve for Peel when they finally got on the scoresheet themselves.

O’Reilly’s in-swinging corner was misjudged by goalkeeper Jane Caley and Vanessa Christian was on hand to side-foot into the net.

Concentration levels dipped again for the visitors which the hosts capitalised on to score their second of the game.

Lisa Pugh dropped a ball down the right wing, releasing Maxine Smalley who sprang the counter-attack before squaring to Sarah Wignall who swept the ball into the net.

However, Royal had the final say. Shimmin raced along the right, played the ball inside for Pate to dink home their sixth and provide a much-needed confidence boost ahead of the forthcoming Ballafletcher derby.

TEAM CHECK

Peel: Kayleigh Greggor, Julia Harrison, Lisa Pugh, Bernadette Dunn, Vanessa Christian, Sarah O’Reilly, Nicola Rooney, Becky Corkish, Sarah Wignall, Natalie Swales, Maxine Smalley, Ellan Cleator, Emma Miller, Alice Henderson

Douglas Royal: Jane Caley, Andrea Lace, Leanne Quayle, Becky Colquitt, Rebecca Cole, Kerri Williams, Donna Shimmin, Rebecca Pate, Sarah Breen, Angela Waite, Jenni Carey, Bride Moore, Katie Halsall. Sub not used: Kerry Lockwood

l Gymnasium yet again proved to be the only club capable of taking points away from the Ballafletcher clubs as Corinthians had an early setback in the league title race following a 1-1 draw against the Tromode outfit at Ballafletcher.

In a competitive and evenly contested match, the Whites led 1-0 at the break courtesy of a Kiera Morgan strike, however the Cronkbourne side levelled after the break via an Eleanor Gawne effort.

DHSOB victories are like London buses - you wait ages for one then two come at once. The Blackberry Lane outfit have made it two wins on the bounce and move joint top in the league table after defeating Castletown 5-3 at the Stadium.

The Blues outfit led 4-0 at the oranges, Rachael Christian (3), Sarah Anderton and Amy Cairney-Beggs scored for the Blackberry Lane outfit, the southern reply came via strikes from Kim Watson (2) and Nicole Reilly.

Profit and revenues up at Manx Telecom

Manx Telecom hailed another solid performance with half year results showing revenues up 4.4 per cent to £39.5m and a 14.1 per cent increase in operating profit to £9.7m.

But the company reported a loss after tax of £5.1m (up from £0.3m last year), due to costs associated with its launch on the Alternative Investment Market.

And while fixed line and broadband revenues rose, by 1 per cent and 5 per cent respectively, mobile revenues fell by 4.2 per cent due to the reduction in mobile termination rates agreed with the regulator in 2013 and increased roaming discounts.

However, MT believe the launch of 4G in July will give it an edge over the competition. Another highlight was the opening of phase one of the new £10m Greenhill data centre.

The board has declared an interim dividend of 3.3p per share payable on November 10.

At the end of August, the company closed its defined benefits pension scheme to new accruals.

Mike Dee, chief executive officer, said: ‘This is our second set of results since becoming a listed company and I am pleased to report on another solid performance, as we continue to make good progress towards achieving our strategic goals.

‘The past six months have seen the launch of 4G on the Isle of Man, the completion of Phase 1 at our new £10m data centre and the declaring of our maiden interim dividend. These developments have contributed to a six month performance that helps to underpin our confidence for the Company’s longer term prospects.’

Can Youthie bounce back from first defeat of the season?

$

The big games continue to come thick and fast in JCK Division Two this weekend with four of the current top five going head-to-head.

Leaders RYCOB succumbed to their first defeat of the season when they went down 2-1 to Douglas Royal last time out and will face another tough test on Saturday when they host Colby.

The latter currently lie fourth in the table five points behind the leaders but with a game in hand and are unbeaten in four.

They did, however, drop two points against Malew last weekend and so, like Youthie, will be keen to get back to winning ways.

With six wins out of seven so far this season and with home advantage, Youthie will be favourites to collect all three points but will find it hard going against the meanest defence in the league.

Another important game takes place at the Memorial Playing Fields in Crosby where fifth-placed Marown go up against second place Douglas Royal.

Just two points separate the sides in the standings so a close game should be in store.

Royal’s aforementioned victory over leaders RYCOB will have given them another confidence boost and should set them up well for the rest of the season, but they will certainly have to be wary of complacency against an impressive Marown side which thumped Onchan 4-0 last time out.

Douglas Athletic will be aiming to continue their fine start to the season when they host Douglas and District.

Athletic lie third in the fledgling standings and go into the game on the back of big wins against Governor’s Athletic, Braddan and Castletown. D&D, though, impressed as they held Onchan to a draw recently so could upset their opponents.

Elsewhere in the second division, Foxdale will be looking to build on their first win of the campaign last week when they take on Castletown at Billy Goat Park, while Braddan face a tricky trip to Springfield Road against Pulrose.

Decision awaited after heated appeal on Heritage Homes plan for Peel

A heated appeal was held today over the approved plan for Heritage Homes to build 144 new houses at Reayrt ny Cronk in Peel.

Peel Commissioners, who are contesting the controversial proposal, were represented by commissioner Ian Davison and town clerk Peter Ledley.

Joining them in speaking out against the plan was Trevor Cowin, who lives opposite the development and was declared an interested party.

Also present were Vincent Fraser QC ,acting on behalf of Heritage Homes, Brian Hall, a consultant civil and transportation planning engineer, Heritage’s planning director, David Humphrey, planning officer Sarah Corlett, case officer Jennifer Chance, and Kevin Almond, from the government’s highways division.

Mr Davison closed the commissioners’ argument saying: ‘At present the infrastructure and resources of the community are stretched. It is the public’s opinion that this development is too large.’

The government’s Strategic Plan recommends 1,000 houses being built in the west between 2001 and 2016 and Mr Fraser added: ‘We are fast approaching 2016. Development is not going to come to a stop then, nor are development needs.’

Planning inspector Alan Langton will now write to minister Phil Gawne MHK with his recommendations before a decision is announced.

All interested parties will then receive the decision and Mr Langton’s report will be published.

For a full report on the appeal, see Tuesday’s Isle of Man Examiner.

For a report about a public meeting held earlier this week on this issue, see today’s Manx Independent.

GPs getting together for another training session

The island’s GPs will meet together for an afternoon education session on Wednesday, October 1.

These education sessions take place every three months, giving GPs the opportunity to discuss developments in medical care and best practice, and to examine ways to enhance care for patients in the Isle of Man.

GP practices across the island will remain open during the afternoon for patients to visit the practice nurse, make future appointments, collect test results and order repeat prescriptions.

GPs will not be available for routine appointments.

Urgent appointments and any urgent visits across the whole island will be provided by locum GPs based at practices in Douglas, Peel and the south.

Anyone who needs to see a doctor urgently on the afternoon of October 1 should ring their GP practice as normal.

Dr Alex Allinson, chair of the GP sub-committee of the Isle of Man Medical Association said: ‘The sessions this year, of which this will be the third, have proved invaluable in enabling GPs to continue their professional education and development.

‘By discussing together how to improve pathways of care and medical treatment outcomes, we can continue to provide the highest quality of care to patients on the Island. We are very appreciative of the public’s support for these education sessions.’

Health and Care Association to hold annual meeting on Monday

The Isle of Man Health and Care Association is holding its second annual general meeting on Monday, September 29, at the commissioners’ offices in Union Mills.

A press statement from spokesman Andrew Jessopp reads: ‘[The year] 2014 has been a successful year for the association with a ‘growing recognition’ by the DHSC, and the management at the hospital, the association can provide valuable assistance to them in their endeavours to overcome many of the challenges facing the health and social care sectors on the island.

‘In particular, it is already being demonstrated the association has the ability to help make the complaints handing process work more effectively; and this is resulting in more satisfactory outcomes for both the parties involved.

‘The association, the DHSC and the hospital management want to develop the complaints advisory service provided by IOMHACA so that an even more effective and efficient mediation service can be offered to residents from 2015 onwards.’

He adds that the association continues with its plans to provide a single point for carers to visit on-line to obtain, and share, information, advice and good practise; and it is hoped that this project will involve input from students at the Isle of Man College.

The first part of the meeting will involve the usual formalities of an annual meeting with reports from the chairman and secretary, the presentation of the accounts and election of three members to the council of management; but once this part is completed there will be an open forum so members can discuss current health and social cares issues.

The meeting starts at 7.30pm prompt and, although open to non-members, only members can vote during the business part of the meeting.

Want to hold a flag day next year?

Charities wishing to hold street collections and flag days in Douglas in 2015 have been invited to apply now to Douglas Development Partnership.

Douglas town centre manager Michelle O’Malley said: ‘Even when household budgets are under pressure, the people of the Isle of Man are unfailingly generous when it comes to supporting local charities. Street collections are a great way for a charitable organisation to engage with the public and promote its campaign, perhaps by staging an event around their collection day in the town centre.’

Under Douglas’s General Byelaws 1991, 28 applications will be considered in any one year (not including emergency two-day street collections following a disaster appeal). For more information search ‘Charitable Collections and Flag Days’ at douglas.gov.im.

Application forms are available from Michelle O’Malley, momalley@douglas.gov.im, or by calling into Douglas Development Partnership’s office at Chesterfield House, Victoria Street, Douglas. Forms may also be downloaded from.douglas.gov.im.

Applications for 2015 must be received by Tuesday, November 12t.

Responding to a draft document on a parking strategy, Ramsey Commissioners have told the Department of Infrastructure they would not support any charges for parking in the town.

They believed Douglas should be considered differently from other parts of the island and were interested to learn what the review of parking has cost.

Roald Dahl theme promises family fun at Manx LitFest event

The genius of author Roald Dahl will be the focus of this year’s Manx Litfest Family Day, which will be held tomorrow (Saturday) in Laxey Glen Gardens.

The event, supported by Sure, runs from 1pm until 5pm and will include Dahl-inspired workshops, performances of Revolting Rhymes by Platform Theatre School, characters to meet (including Willy Wonka, Charlie Bucket and Matilda), a Bug Hotel in association with Manx Wildlife Trust, games and activities, and a special visit by authors and illustrators Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre, who will be performing their Oliver and the Seawigs show.

The third Manx Litfest started on Wednesday and runs until Sunday with events across the island aimed at book lovers of all ages.

Festival director John Quirk said: ‘We are all just a little bit excited by this year’s family day. After the Gruffalo Hunt in 2012, and Winnie the Pooh and Friends last year, the wonderful work of Roald Dahl provides a fantastic opportunity for children - and grownups - to enjoy themselves and, having had a look around Laxey Glen Gardens recently, it’s an ideal and beautiful venue for the event.

‘For the second family day running, we are extremely grateful to Sure for supporting the event and allowing us to stage the day’s activities, and to the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture for allowing us to use the gardens for this event.’

Times to note are: 1.30pm, Revolting Rhymes performance; 2.30pm, Oliver and the Seawigs; 4pm, Revolting Rhymes performance.

The Roald Dahl workshops, run by author Mark Lowery, sold out very quickly. These will take place at 1.15pm and 3.15pm.

Visitors on the day are asked to be mindful of parking - there is limited space in the car park at Laxey Glen Gardens, so if possible, park elsewhere in the village and walk the final part. Alternatively, why not make a day of it and take the Manx Electric Railway to Laxey.

The full schedule for this year’s festival can be seen on www.manxlitfest.com and printed programmes and event flyers have been distributed around the Island, including to bookshops and libraries. You can also keep up to date with the festival on www.facebook.com/manxlitfest and www.twitter.com/manxlitfest

Sarah Jarvis of Surer, said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to support this amazing event – every year the Litfest Family Day gets bigger and better! Sure is dedicated to supporting events in the Isle of Man community and this is one of the very best. I hope everyone has a great day and that the sun shines. I just wish my own children weren’t away at university – they loved Dahl’s books when they were growing up!’

Manx Litfest is a registered charity and has been supported each year by Isle of Man Arts Council and Culture Vannin, along with several corporate sponsors.

Runners donned their jazziest pants for the annual Marathong fun run.

The race, organised by Manx Cancer Help, saw participants running the streets of Douglas in everything from giant pants to boxer shorts.

Isle of Man Newspapers photographer Mike Wade captured some of the runners limbering up in Victoria Street at the start of Friday’s event .

First to cross the finish line was Andrew Newton, closely followed by last year’s winner Ben Scott. Ally Martin, the charity’s fundraising events co-ordinator, said: ‘Sincere thanks to all who turned out to help raise awareness of Manx Cancer Help, a brilliant day.’

Police review rules to deal with underage drinkers

$

Police procedures relating to the seizure of booze from underage drinkers is to be reviewed.

The review forms part of a six-week consultation launched this week into plans to modernise police codes of practice. Feedback from the public will be considered before the legislation is submitted to Tynwald.

As the Isle of Man Examiner reported on Tuesday, police seized what they described as a ‘significant haul’ of alcohol from children, some as young as 12, at an open air party in Scarlett last weekend.

Acting on a tip off, officers found a large number of under age children with alcohol including bottles of vodka, and cans and bottles of lager.

In July, officers urged parents to take responsibility for their children after a recent spate of underage drinking parties, one of which left a youth with a fractured jaw.

Police codes relate to the exercise of officers’ powers on a range of matters including arrest, stop and search, searches of premises and seizure of property, detention, treatment and questioning of people, and interviews.

The Department of Home Affairs is seeking to update the codes that have not been substantially revised since 1998, with the intention of providing officers with up-to-date guidance that better reflects current legislation and operational practices.

But the opportunity has also been taken to consult on procedures to be followed by the police over alcohol found in the possession of minors and drinking in public places in the Isle of Man.

Home Affairs Minister Juan Watterson MHK said: ‘Since the current police codes came into operation 15 years ago there have been significant changes to legislation and operational practices relating to criminal law and human rights. The proposed new codes are essentially the same as those used by police forces in England and Wales, with some small but important changes to meet the needs of the island.’

He added: ‘The Isle of Man Constabulary has been very effective in driving down levels of crime and supporting the department’s commitment to maintaining community safety.

‘The new police codes will help officers by updating the procedures they must follow when exercising their powers. I would encourage people to take part in the consultation. We will listen to their views before taking the new police codes forward for consideration by Tynwald.’

Following amendments to the Licensing Act a couple of years ago, officers can now require a person to stop drinking alcohol in any public place in the island at any time.

Previously police could only do this in areas specified in an Order and where a person was drunk and disorderly.

Similarly, the police have always had the power to remove alcohol from a minor, but previously needed a court order to dispose of it – which was considered overly bureaucratic. Now, they dispose of it as they see fit without going to court.

The proposed Codes will update the guidance to how and when to remove alcohol from underage drinkers and how to dispose of it.

Problems with parties and large gatherings of youngsters drinking prompted the police in the summer to issue advice asking parents: ‘Do you know where your child is tonight?’.

One such party in Castletown, organised via Facebook, attracted more than 100 young people from around the island who gathered in fields near the weir in Silverburn river, next to Poulsom Park.

Subject to approval, the intention is to bring the new codes into operation at the same time as the Criminal Justice, Police Powers and Other Amendments Act 2014, which gained Royal Assent in May.

The police codes consultation document is available to view at http://www.gov.im/ConsultationDetail.gov?id=460

Deadline for submissions is 5pm on Monday, November 3.

Douglas B travel to Southern Nomads in Shield

$

Two of the favourites for the Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield meet this Saturday at King William’s College.

Unbeaten PDMS Southern Nomads host unbeaten Douglas B in what should be an entertaining clash.

Douglas have been unstoppable so far this season.

They have an experienced big pack of forwards and some young talent in the backline too.

They swept the defending champions aside last Saturday and look to have plenty of strength in depth.

Nomads’ start to the season has been much more mixed.

They beat Oswestry in the Cheshire Bowl but since then have had a walkover, a free week and a game against Emerging Nomads, who put up a brave fight, but didn’t provide the sort of test that Douglas will.

I watched Douglas play last Saturday and Nomads will have a big job to beat them, although with a few players possibly moving up to the first team bench it is possible that the Port-e-Chee outfit may lose some of last Saturday’s sharpness. I fancy Douglas may just sneak this one.

Please note that there is a possibility the kick off time for this game may be brought forward. Please check with the clubs before you travel.

Elsewhere in the Shield, Castletown host Vagabonds B at Poulsom Park.

Vagas will be looking to bounce back from last week’s thrashing at Douglas and Castletown could face a little backlash.

The Town confidence desperately needs a shot in the arm and they showed at Ramsey two weeks ago that they are capable of scoring even when short handed. This should, however, be a Vagas win.

The final game of the week is at QEII School Peel where Western Vikings, fresh from last week’s first win of the season, will be looking to double up against Emerging Nomads.

Vikings opened with two toughies and if they can start to pick off the slightly weaker sides, they could get themselves into a top-three position. I suspect this will be another Vikings win.

Midfielders’ time to shine in latest TotW

Some of the Canada Life Premier League’s midfield schemers are put in the spotlight in the latest Isle of Man Newspapers’ Team of the Week.

The Isle of Man FA’s trip to the UEFA Regions Cup in Slovakia means that only three top-flight games went ahead on Saturday.

Douglas High School Old Boys took advantage of a lull in action by the rest of the division’s leading lights to move top of the fledgling standings after a 4-1 win over Ayre at Blackberry Lane.

The in-form Robbie Ward continued his fine start to the season with another good showing in the Old Boys’ engine room.

Ward laid on two goals and hit the woodwork twice as the John Ward’s side notched up their fourth win of the campaign.

Slotting in alongside the left-footer in the TotW’s four-man midfield are Nick Bowden (Gymns), Blane Slattery (Corinthians) and Jamie Johnston (Union Mills).

Slattery impressed the watching player ratings panel in the Whites’ 4-2 win at Michael.

Bowden and former Braddan man Johnston were both on the scoresheet in the early-season six-pointer at Garey Mooar.

Johnston put the Millers ahead with a well-taken strike but goals from the influential Bowden, Dan Simpson and sub Mark Burman gave Gymns the 3-1 win and a vital three points.

Also impressing in that match was Gymns’ Conor Dempsey, the pacy former St George’s forward joining Danny Oram (Corinthians) and Callum Stewart (DHSOB) in a three-pronged attack.

Oram makes his second TotW appearance of the season after grabbing an important brace against Michael. Stewart was also at the double at Blackberry Lane, finding the net twice as promoted Ayre were beaten.

In defence, Stewart’s club-mate Phil Knox makes up a three-man backline with Rob Christian (Michael) and Stewart Smith (Corinthians).

Full-back Knox impressed at the back while also getting forward to good effect against the battling Tangerines, while versatile defender Rob Christian produced a dogged display in defeat as Michael were edged out by Corinthians.

Starring for the latter side was centre-back Stewart Smith who grabbed a goal and produced a man of the match performance as the Whites triumphed in the west.

Goalkeeping honours this week go to Gymns James Brown after he made several good saves to help the Tromode outfit to a second win of the season.

Also impressing in that match at Union Mills was referee John McCallum who picks up the latest RotW accolade.

Tax return due: are you ready?

$
0
0

Grant Thornton senior tax manager Raj Nandha explains what to do if you haven’t got all your paperwork ready for the looming tax return deadline.

---------------------

It is that time of the year again when you need to consider completing your Manx personal tax return for the year ended April 5, 2014 (tax year 2013/2014), and submitting it to the Manx Income Tax Division (MITD), if you haven’t already done so.

The filing deadline for the 2013/2014 personal tax return is next Monday, October 6.

Failure to submit your tax return by the deadline will result in a late filing penalty of £100 being levied by the MITD. If the return is not submitted by the following April 5, i.e. April 5, 2015, for the 2013/2014 tax return, a further penalty of £200 will be levied by the MITD.

The tax return can be submitted with provisional figures if you are still awaiting further information. For example, you could be pending your mortgage interest charge certificate from your bank, or your T14 employment summary certificate from your employer. If the return is submitted with provisional figures, these amounts must be replaced with the actual figures as soon as possible.

A request for a ‘default assessment’, in order to avoid a late filing penalty, can be made to the MITD if certain conditions are met. For example, you receive income from being self-employed and still need to calculate and prepare your trading income and expenditure statement due to outstanding information, or you have overseas taxed income and are awaiting information on this income source, or you have experienced exceptional personal circumstances immediately before the filing deadline such as illness.

However, if a default assessment is requested and it transpires that the conditions do not actually apply, a late return penalty charge will be issued by the MITD.

If you deal with an Isle of Man trust or partnership, the same filing deadline and late filing penalties apply.

Please note that tax due for the 2013/2014 tax year is required to be paid to the MITD by January 6, 2015.

Rally Isle of Man on TV tonight

$
0
0

Coverage of the 2014 Rally Isle of Man powered by Microgaming hits television screens tonight (Friday) with not one show, nor two, but three separate programmes on this evening.

Underlining the importance of the event within British isles rallying, all the action from two weeks ago was captured by two program producers and shows are tailored according to the Championships the event played host to.

The first of the shows on Motors TV (channel 447 on Sky) will feature the dramatic climax to the MSA British Rally Championship as Daniel McKenna and Osian Pryce battled for the title, filmed by island-based Greenlight TV.

As the event was split into two points scoring opportunities for crews, so the story will be told in back-to-back shows at 8.30pm and 9pm.

Later on the same night, at 11.05pm, it’s the turn of the Mintex MSA British Historic Championship, with an hour-long program filmed by Special Stage TV.

Amongst those to feature will be David Stokes, who was bidding to tie up another Championship title, impressive event newcomer Meirion Evans and British rallying legend Jimmy McRae.

And with the event held amidst the best weather for many years, this wonderful island of motorsport will present a stunning backdrop to the action.

Both shows will be repeated across the weekend, and because that’s still not enough, next Friday, October 3 there will be yet more coverage.

A separate hour-long program will focus on the Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally Championship element of the three-day event, as Arron Newby/Rob Fagg attempt to retain their title, taking on drivers such as Steve Colley and Nigel Cannell. This show will also cover the rally away from the BRC and British Historic angle.

Chance to catch punk band Poison Hearts

$

With a plethora of bands, singer/songwriters and DJs making up a vibrant and varied music scene, showing the general public on the island what it has to offer, this weekend is no exception.

The Amber Bar in Douglas plays host to one of only a couple of punk bands based on the Isle of Man.

Poison Hearts have been kicking around and flying the flag for the heyday of punk for a good few years now.

Mixing the fledgling sounds of the likes of the Sex Pistols and The Damned, via a smattering of Motorhead, to the more recent influences of Social Distortion, the band have been back on the Manx gig circuit for a little over a year now having been on hiatus for the previous four.

Their 2008 debut album and only release to date ‘True Necromance’ showcases just what these boys bring to the table. If a bit of high energy, trashy, no nonsense Punk Rock is up your street, then you can’t go far wrong in giving these boys a listen.

The band hit the stage at around 10pm on Saturday night and the event is free entry.

Talking of all things Punk and with a side step into the Alternative Genre, Manx gig veterans Postcode are also out and about this Saturday night as they take their Punk-esq/Alternative sounds to the New Social Studio (formerly the Basement Bar, below The Rovers Return) in Douglas. Having formed in 2005, the band has released numerous albums and EP’s via the Manx based Small Bear Records imprint throughout their career to date. The band fronted by Marie Reynolds and complimented by guitarists Mikie Daugherty and Kieran Ball, Steve Halsall on Bass and Johnny Peacock on Drums, are appearing in a slightly more stripped down acoustic guise for this show on the bill as support to dark, ethereal soundscape noisemakers Post War Stories, another band who would also certainly be considered as veterans of the Manx music scene having gone from their original incarnation as Gratiz 3 to Planes Over Paris to their current moniker.

Another Saturday night show now and to Jaks in Douglas where The Barefoot Revolution will be bringing what can be termed as ‘college rock’ to the night’s proceedings. The band specialise in covers by the likes of Blink 182, The Offspring, Green Day and Jimmy Eat World amongst others. Well worth a look at, if this sounds like your type of thing.

Rendezvous Airport Services is set to launch a flying school based at the airport tomorrow (Saturday).

It offers pilot training from beginners to advanced commercial training.

Rendezvous has teamed up with the Flintshire Flying School, based at Hawarden in Chester, to form a UK CAA approved flying school and will operate under the name of Isle of Man Flight Training.

Isle of Man Flight Training will be able to offer full private pilot licences and follow on training, including night and instrument training using 2 Piper PA28 four seat training aircraft, and under the instruction of experienced approved instructors.

Initially the flying school will operate at weekends only until April 1 when it plans then to operate seven days a week, although the school will be open most days for visitors, enquiries, during the winter months.

Next year will also see the re-opening of the clubhouse at Derbyhaven once renovations have taken place giving an added extra to the environment of a flying school, and it is planned to offer food and refreshments as well as being a warm welcoming addition to the world of flying.

Isle of Man Flight Training will also offer trial flying lesson Vouchers, where anybody wishing to experience taking controls of a plane can also take along two family members or friends to join them on their experience, of a flight between 30 minutes to an hour.

Isle of Man Flight Training will be able to offer pay as you train lessons, or discounts are available for block bookings and prepay full course, together with ground school and exams on site.

Brett Turner, chief executive officer for the group, said: ‘As a private pilot myself since 1989, I am excited to be delivering a dedicated flying school to the island, backed up by a full social side in a dedicated clubhouse.

‘I understand the importance of student pilots being able to spend time in the flying environment talking and discussing experiences with other pilots and through the launch of this exciting business venture I look forward to welcoming new students.’
