Car dealership to be wound up

One of the island’s best known car dealerships is going into voluntary liquidation.

A meeting of creditors of Barry Curran Motors will take place at noon on Wednesday (August 27) at Burleigh Manor on Peel Road, Douglas.

The voluntary winding up the company was announced to shocked staff on Wednesday.

Having relocated from Ramsey in 2007, Barry Curran Motors had a showroom on Demense Road, Douglas, before the Hyundai dealership moved to its ‘car superstore’ on Isle of Man Business Park, off Cooil Road, Braddan.

Youth entrepreneurs backed

PDMS boss Chris Gledhill has returned from Estonia where he helped judge Europe’s largest youth entrpreneurship competition.

Mr Gledhill is managing director of the software development company based in the Isle of Man with offices in Glasgow and London.

He was in Tallinn, Estonia as one of 10 senior business judges for the 25th Junior Achievement – Young Enterprise Company of the Year Competition 2014 (JA-YE Europe).

An Isle of Man team won one of the awards, the People’s Choice award.

Chris was nominated to the judging panel by Junior Achievement Isle of Man, after his contributions as chairman last year.

This year, 250,000 students entered the competition and only the top 38 student companies were showcased at the final, representing 500 students, teachers, business advisors and partners at the three day event.

JA-YE Europe is Europe’s largest provider of entrepreneurship education programmes for young people, reaching 3.2 million students in 39 different countries last year alone.

Funded by businesses, foundations, institutions and individuals, the aim of the charity is to bring together public and private sectors to help inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.

Commenting on the event Mr Gledhill said: ‘The competition was exceptionally inspiring and it was great to see the extent of the support for the event - Estonia’s Minister of Education was part of the keynote address with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia, Taavi Roivas opening the awards ceremony.

‘In particular the Prime Ministers’ reflection on his own Junior Achievement experience as an alumni was very insightful.

‘All of the finalists demonstrated consistently high standards and the cultural diversity of the participants reflected not only their thirst for success and ambition, but talent’.

The student company finalists had been running their businesses for up to a year ahead of the competition, with each company expected to create and market real products and/or services, successfully dealing with the challenges of setting up and running a business.

The coveted company of the year competition is judged based on an annual report, live presentations, a panel interview and a trade show on the third day of the event.

Key criteria for the championships included marketing and sales strategy, objective setting, financial systems, personnel management, product or service development and customer focus.

Reflecting on the experience Mr Gledhill said: ‘The most memorable part of the judging experience was definitely the trade show – to see the students together in such a concentrated environment with their products was fantastic – a real opportunity to get to know the students.

‘I was also impressed by their natural engagement with and innovative use of technology – the next generations are truly digital natives!’

For those that didn’t walk away with an award on the night, Mr Gledhill added: ‘It is important to remember that the competition itself does not define the quality of entrepreneurship displayed and is only a snapshot of the learning experience over the past year.

‘Many of the student companies had very viable business propositions and I expect many of these to survive long after the event.’

PDMS congratulated Isle of Man team Simple Minds from Ballakermeen High School, who won the People’s Choice Award for their ‘Need a Hand?’ polyurethane self-sealing gloves to pick up dog waste through Facebook votes.

Their Rio Allison was also selected as one of only 15 students to receive the Alumni Leadership Award.

Overall competition winner was E14-Magma from Iceland, who designed and produced souvenir shot glasses made from black clay and Icelandic lava.

Mr Gledhill said: ‘Winning the People’s Choice Award this year, through online voting, was a fantastic joined up effort coordinated by JA IOM and proves how well connected the island can be.

‘PDMS has been a long standing supporter of JA IOM and we look forward to the next company programme’.

Owen Dudley was voted Team RL360’s rider of the month for June.

The talented youngster received the award for the impressive performances he produced during the month.

At home Owen excelled in two of the month’s road races, winning the B event in the Fred Kelly Memorial to claim the Isle of Man juvenile championship and finishing a very good 10th overall and first juvenile in the Nick Corkill Memorial road race at the end of TT fortnight.

He also finished second and first in the opening two rounds of the Bikestyle handicap series, while picking up his fourth win in the very competitive under-16 class in the RL360 Youth League at the NSC.

Demonstrating his versatility, Owen Dudley won June’s Isle of Man regional heat of the GHS Juvenile Time Trial Championship to qualify for the national final in September.

Off-island, he was a fine seventh in the fourth round of British Cycling’s national youth series in Milton Keynes and shortly afterwards was a good 13th in the British National Youth Championships in Essex when sprinting for fourth place.

In recognition of his achievements, Owen received a commemorative trophy and a £50 cash prize.

PokerStars mixed tennis leagues into final week

With only one week of scheduled fixtures remaining in the Isle of Man Lawn Tennis Association PokerStars-sponsored mixed league all divisions remain undecided.

A number of teams took a big step towards their respective titles last week.

In Division One, Castletown B put an end to Albany Auxesia A’s slim title hopes with a very close match in sunny, but windy conditions at Castletown.

Lucy Kerr and Neil Ronan won the first but lost the second to Laura Feely and Andy Murray 6-4 3-6.

Castletown’s second pair of Justine Torry and Rob Mason lost the first but won the second against Katie Harris and Victor Pacaco 2-6 6-2. This left it all to play for with two sets remaining.

Kerr and Ronan took care of Harris and Pacaco 6-2, but Torry and Mason couldn’t quite do the same, losing out 1-6 to Feely and Murray. Final score a 3-3 draw.

Kensington Road A took a huge leap to playing Division One tennis next season with a comfortable 5-1 win at home against Albany B in Division Two.

For the home side Karen Faragher and Stewart Swann did the real damage, firstly beating Jane Reynolds and Jim Travers 6-1 6-2 and then going on to beat Kirsten Hall and Andy Murray 6-0.

The home side’s second pair of Linda Faragher and Steph Joyce didn’t have things quite so easy though, losing their first set 1-6 to Hall and Murray but turning things around to take the second set 6-3. With the match already won, Linda Faragher and Joyce then had a very tough battle against Reynolds and Travers, eventually coming out 7-6 winners in a tie-break. Final score 5-1 to Kensington Road A.

In Division Four, Port Erin B kept their hopes of the title with a good victory at home against previous table-toppers Kensington Road C.

Tricia Taylor and Ricky Broadbent got the home side off to the perfect start with a 6-1 6-4 win against their opposite first pair of Colette Maher and Louis McCleery.

Pat Crellin and Simon Jones couldn’t quite do the same, losing the first set 3-6 but winning the second 6-0 against Pauline Doherty and Steph Joyce.

This left the visitors needing both the remaining sets to rescue a draw. But it wasn’t to be with Taylor and Broadbent beating Doherty and Joyce 6-4. The visitors picked up a consolation set with Maher and McCleery winning the last set 6-4 against Crellin and Jones. Final score 4-2 to Port Erin B.

Other match scores in week five were: Division One Castletown A v Castletown C (postponed); Division Two Kensington Road B 6, Ramsey A 0 (walkover); Division Three Castletown E v Albany C (postponed), Castletown D 3, Port Erin A 3.

Road closure rumpus

Derby Road in Peel has been closed this week for resurfacing, a move which angered Peel commissioners and residents.

The road runs past Shoprite, Peel Clothworkers’ School, the swimming pool and campsite with work scheduled to be completed today (Friday).

At the latest Peel Commissioners meeting, town clerk, Peter Leadley said: ‘We have received a lot of complaints from residents about this.’

Commissioner Kate Felton said: ‘What possessed them to do this during Manx Grand Prix week?’

Commissioner Alan Jones said: ‘They should have consulted with us.’

The board then agreed that they would write a letter to the Department of Infrastructure requesting that they be informed of future upcoming major roadworks in Peel.

The work was originally scheduled to go on from August 18 until August 31.

A statement from the Department of Infrastructure said: ‘Derby Road will be closed from its junction with Derby Drive to Ballaquane Road from 9.15am until 8pm daily, commencing August 18.

‘In order to maintain access to Kerroo Coar, Peel Clothworkers’ School and Western Swimming Pool and campsite, the job will be split into three sections:

‘Section One – Shoprite entrance through to halfway across Kerroo Coar, both carriageways.

‘Section Two – Continue from Kerroo Coar through to halfway across the entrance to Swimming Pool/Campsite.

‘Section Three – Swimming Pool and Campsite through to just before the roundabout.

‘The August 31 date was a contingency in case additional time was needed in the event of poor weather or delays in the work programme.

‘However, we do not intend to use the second week in order to avoid a clash with the Festival of Motorcycling.’

It’s a ‘new dawn’ for architects

Clients and associates of Hugh Logan Architects helped the Castletown-based firm mark 10 years in business at a reception at Bradda Glen Restaurant.

To coincide with the anniversary, HLA unveiled a new corporate identity as it enters a new chapter in the business’s development.

Director Hugh Logan, whose prominent projects include Skandia House in Onchan and Callow’s Yard in Castletown, told guests that HLA had taken a new direction, with a company formed late last year and now in operation, introducing ‘new blood and experience’ at board level.

‘It’s a new dawn for HLA, and an exciting one with great potential,’ Hugh said. ‘At the reception, in order to allow everyone to enjoy the lovely afternoon and beautiful location, I tried to avoid thanking individually the incredibly long list of people who have helped us reach where we are today.

‘However, there is one person to whom I did give special thanks – my secretary, Karen Wright, whose hard work and abilities have been invaluable to me over the years.

‘We’ve had to weather the economic downturn since 2008, and came through an extremely difficult period.

‘It was certainly a challenge, but I’m pleased to say that everything is now in place for the company to prosper in the years ahead.’

Born in the Scottish Highlands in 1957, Hugh was brought up in North Yorkshire and studied at the Oxford School of Architecture, completing undergraduate and postgraduate studies and passing his final Royal Institute of British Architects exam in 1983.

He moved to the island with his wife, Linda, and children in 1994, when he joined Davidson Marsh Barua (formerly Davidson Marsh & Co).Of the many and varied projects HLA has undertaken, Hugh counts the Ellan Veen apartments in College Green, Castletown and an affordable housing scheme at Hampton Farm at the top of New Castletown Road, Douglas, amongst the most rewarding.

New driving theory test to be introduced next month

An updated driving theory test is being introduced in the Isle of Man.

It has been developed by officers from the Department of Infrastructure in conjunction with their counterparts in Jersey and Guernsey.

The government says collaborative working has enabled the theory test questions to ‘reflect the unique aspects of driving in an island, as well as highlighting the differences that will be encountered if driving in the UK’.

It has also helped to cut the cost of the project.

The revised driving theory test is scheduled to come into effect for learner drivers and motorcycle riders from Thursday, September 4, replacing the current version which has been in place since 2004.

The computer-based test, which features multiple choice questions and answers and a section on hazard perception, must be passed before candidates can apply to take their practical driving examination.

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne MHK said: ‘We are continually striving to improve driving standards in the Isle of Man to make our roads as safe as possible. The updated test should ensure that new drivers and riders have greater theory-based knowledge at the start of their motoring experience. It is important for learners to have a good understanding of the rules of the road before they get behind the wheel to take their practical driving test.’

He added: ‘I am delighted that we have been able to work in partnership with our colleagues in Jersey and Guernsey to develop the new theory test. Sharing expertise and costs has been beneficial for all parties.’

From September 4, learner drivers and motorcyclists taking the theory test will face questions designed to place greater emphasis on the demands of modern motoring, including safety and environmental issues, vehicle knowledge and being more considerate to other road users.

A new feature of the test is a voice-over option, which allows candidates to listen to the questions and answers being read out in English if required. This is designed to assist those who experience difficulties with reading.

All new provisional licence applicants receive a training package, including a CD featuring example questions and hazard perception clips, so they can practise before taking the theory test. This CD includes additional information and explanations, so anyone clicking a wrong answer can discover why it is incorrect and be guided towards the right answer.

The new CD asks people which island they live in – and selecting the ‘Isle of Man’ will ensure that no questions specific to Jersey or Guernsey will appear.

Candidates applying to take the theory test after September 4 should practise using the updated training package. Anyone who has the previous version can exchange it free of charge at the Isle of Man College of Further and Higher Education or at the Vehicle Test Centre on Ballafletcher Road, Tromode.

Retained firefighter’s funeral to take place next week

The funeral of a motorcyclist Neil Walker will take place next week.

It will take place on Thursday (August 28) at St Paul’s Church in Ramsey, followed by interment at Lezayre Churchyard.

Mr Walker, a 43-year-old father of two from Ramsey, was well known through his work as a joiner and as a retained firefighter.

He died on August 6 when his motorcycle and a car collided near Bulgham Bay on the coast road between the Dhoon and Laxey.

His death notice describes him as the beloved husband of Jenny, devoted father of Megan and Jake, and much-loved son of Joan and the late Donald.

The family have requested that there should be family flowers only at the funeral, with donations in lieu to the Hyperbaric Chamber, Manx Grand Prix Helicopter Fund or The Fire Service Benevolent Fund.

The inquest into Mr Walker’s death was opened last week.

It said he died due to multiple injuries.

The full inquest will be heard at a later date.

Funeral directors Corkhill and Callow of 4 Christian Street, Ramsey, are making the arrangements.

After Mr Walker died, chief fire officer Kevin Groom said: ‘Neilwas a truly professional firefighter who had served at Ramsey fire station for over 22 years.’

The driver of the Volkswagen Golf involved in the accident was treated in hospital for a minor head injury but later released. His two passengers were shaken but uninjured.

The new Manx Premier League swings into action on Sunday with the first games in this IPL-style T20 competition.

Over the next two weeks, four specially selected sides will compete for the MPL Trophy.

They first play each other in a league format with the top two teams going through to the final at Mullen-e-Cloie on Sunday, August 31.

Four captains were nominated – Mark Williams, Ollie Webster, Phil Littlejohns and Ryan Windell. They each chose a wicketkeeper then, two selections at a time, the the rest of their squad.

The general rules were that no more than four senior players could come from the same club and each side must have at least two members of the island junior development squad.

Two grounds are to be used – Crosby and Mullen-e-Cloie. Ali Ansari is the tournament director.
