Pakistani politicans visit the island and admire our rain

Ten members of a regional political assembly in Pakistan visited the island this week.

It’s the second time that a delegation of politicians from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has visited.

Fazal Shakoor, one of the 10 members who arrived at the weekend for a two-day study programme, said: ‘The aim was to understand the parliamentary systems and if we see some room for improvement in our system we will take those things from here to our country and try to observe and adopt those things which can be helpful to our people and our system.

‘There is always room for improvement in all systems, just as you may have adopted some rules from other places.’

His colleague, Sobia Shahid, who is a keen advocate for women in the province, added: ‘We liked the sessions on legislation, information technology and Hansard, and meeting with the Speaker of the House of Keys. We were very impressed.

‘We have some problems with our legislative system so it will be good for us to learn. It was a good experience to bring in change. Hopefully we will learn from you and you will learn from us by working together.

‘This is our first time in Europe so it is a very good opportunity for us. It is a very beautiful Island with the sea, and the people are very friendly.’

Mr Shakoor added: ‘We even like the rain because we are experiencing a long drought at home. It hasn’t rained for over four months there!’

Next week Tynwald will host a one-day visit from the region’s Speaker, Mr Asad Qaiser, where he will meet with the President of Tynwald, the Chief Minister and the Speaker of the House of Keys.

One planned outcome of his trip is for a Memorandum of Understanding to be signed by both parties.

This will solidify the agreement that by the end of next year Tynwald will have welcomed all 124 members of the assembly, in groups of about 10, as part of the British Council-sponsored project which also involves the Scottish Parliament.

Football: Peel pitch out of action until next season

Peel Football Club has confirmed that its Douglas Road pitch will not be available to use again until the start of 2017-18 season.

The westerners haven’t played a game at the ground this campaign after glass was found in sand they used to treat the pitch in pre-season.

The club released a statement on its Facebook page on Thursday afternoon saying: ‘A sports grounds specialist firm has now been engaged to oversee a tender process and project manage the engagement of contractors to excavate the contaminated top layer of soil, relay fresh soil and re-seed the grass.

‘The contractors will be selected from specialist sports turf firms. Seeding unfortunately cannot take place until April 2017 because of seasonal weather/temperatures.

‘The club has been advised that the pitch should be back in play around the start of the 2017-18 season.

‘The club has explored all options together with the pitch expert engaged, including re-turfing, however the proposed approach was deemed the only viable method.

‘The grandstand improvements continue to progress, and work will continue over the coming weeks to complete this job. The seats have arrived, and will be installed in due course.’

Woman, 30, claimed £18,000 in benefits while working

A Douglas woman failed to tell the authorities she had been working and continued to claim benefits, a court has heard.

Douglas magistrates were told April Castaneda Orque, of Alexander Drive, claimed payments to which she was not entitled between February 2013 and March 2015.

For the prosecution, Barry Swain said the claim had started out as an honest one but became dishonest later on. He said the 30-year-old had been a single mother claiming income support and had one dependant child. However, he said she had continued to claim the benefit without declaring she had been working for the brewers Heron and Brearley.

He told the court the total overpayment was £18,338 but some sums had been repaid and the amount outstanding was now reduced to £18,188.

The court agreed to adjourn the matter for a period of six weeks to allow time for a social enquiry report to be compiled before sentencing. She was bailed subject to a £500 recognisance.

She is to live at her home address and must contact probation and co-operate with making the report. She is to reappear before the court for sentencing on December 8.

Swimmers raise money for the Children’s Centre

New multisports/triathlon club TEA Multisports held a four-week ‘Introduction to Open Water Swimming course’ at the Mooragh Lake in Ramsey.

The course was designed to help new triathletes prepare for the Granite Mann triathlon.

Head coach Jill Bunyan, who also runs pool sessions at Western Swimming Pool for SwimTech, said: ‘The participants all got very enthusiastically involved and we had a lot of fun teaching open water swimming techniques as well as transition skills for triathlon.

‘We even held our own mini-triathlon”.’

The more experienced club members from TEA multisports got involved with the coaching and others helped with safety and first aid.

A total of £200 was raised by the course, which was donated to the Children’s Centre. Pool sessions continue over the winter, and further open water sessions will be held next season.

The money raised will go towards supporting The Children’s Centre charitable projects one of which is - Adventure Therapy (MOBEX) – this offers an alternative education programme that uses creative outdoor activities to support young people who are struggling with some aspects of mainstream education or with their home life. Learning a skill like abseiling or kayaking often involves overcoming an element of fear. This gives the young person a real sense of achievement and can often help young people turn a corner as they think ‘if I can do that, what else can I achieve?’

The photo shows some of the SwimTech swimmers who took part or assisted with running the course.

Panto stamps launch with star Biggins

Actor and television presenter Christopher Biggins will be visiting the island at the weekend.

He will be visiting the new Douglas post office on Strand Street from midday to 2pm on Saturday, where he will be in the shop to meet and greet customers and have photos taken with them.

He will also be collecting Father Christmas’s letters and signing the Christmas pantomimes first day stamp covers, which will be available to buy on the day at £7.10 each.

Christopher Biggins played a pivotal role in the production of the Post Office’s stamp collection, having written the accompanying issue text which tells the story of panto.

Sitting alongside this is six stamps featuring iconic images from some of Britain’s favourite pantomimes including The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Aladdin, Snow White, Dick Whittington and Robin Hood.

Last year he shared his expertise and enthusiasm with Manx amateur performers as head judge of local pantomime competition, The Battle of the Pantos.

Biggins, who also acted in I Claudius and Porridge in the seventies, has clocked up more than 40 years performing in pantomimes.

He has been described as the ‘undisputed Grand Dame of British theatre’.

The Post Office is so keen to promote Biggins’ appearance it has even been using a postmark this week to publicise his visit.

‘Vilification of diocesan bishop completely unjustified,’ says Archbishop Sentamu

$

A clergyman’s vilification of his diocesan bishop was ‘completely unjustified’, the Archbishop of York has concluded.

Rev Dr Canon Jules Gomes’s conduct was ‘unbecoming or inappropriate’ to the office and work of the clergy, a Bishop’s Disciplinary Tribunal found last month following a three-day hearing.

The tribunal will reconvene next month to determine what sanctions Rev Gomes should face.

Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, said he was aware of comments made by Dr Gomes on the radio in which he likened Bishop Robert’s approach to dealing with disciplinary issues to Sharia law.

Dr Sentamu said: ‘It is clear to me that the nature of those comments confirms and underscores the findings of the tribunal, and are further proof that Dr Gomes casts aspersions without reason.

‘Dr Gomes’ vilification of his diocesan bishop has been completely unjustified.’

A complaint of misconduct had been made against Rev Gomes, former vicar of Arbory and Castletown and Canon Theologian of St German’s Cathedral, by Archdeacon Andrew Brown.

The tribunal, which Rev Gomes refused to attend as he said he didn’t recognise its authority, adjudged the Archdeacon’s complaint as well-founded and the case against him proved.

Outlining the principal findings, tribunal chairman Geoffrey Tattersall QC said Rev Gomes had an ‘over-inflated view of his own self-importance’, and dealt with people with ‘little or no compassion or pastoral concern’.

He said the clergyman lost his temper and displayed anger, even to those who continued to support him. His behaviour had caused ‘serious harm’ to people and caused them to leave their offices or his church, and he did not seem to understand the need to express remorse or amend his ways, the tribunal found.

Finally, he made untrue statements against Bishop Robert Paterson, the Archdeacon and Rev Erica Scott.

‘We have no doubt that such behaviour on the part of the respondent has damaged the reputation of the Church,’ the judgment concluded.

The Church of England imposes penalties of ‘prohibition’ from ministry which can be for a year, a number of years or for life, and it can also be suspended if the respondent is willing to meet certain conditions.

Any cleric who is prohibited will also find themselves unable to minister in the Anglican Provinces of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and their name goes on, and stays on, The Archbishops’ List which must be consulted by Bishops before they make any appointments.

Winery’s turbines plan gains support from commissioners

A proposal for eight wind turbines at the Coal Shed, Breakwater Road in Port Erin, for the Foraging Vintners got the support of the local authority on Tuesday.

The plan, PA 16/01172/B, is for window/door alterations, the installation of a flue and eight roof-mounted wind turbines and creation of an outside seating area for the new winery that is making the drink out of locally-grown produce.

Commissioners’ clerk Jason Roberts said there have been comments concerned about the plan setting a precedent for wind turbines especially on ‘architecturally significant’ buildings in a draft conservation area.

Also there are objections from 7th Wave, the sailing school which rents the unit next door.

They are worried about outdoor seating blocking access to rescue boats they use at least 10 times a day during the peak sesason; they require 24 hour access and room to turn a tractor and trailer.

7th Wave also asked if this will create a precedent ‘to push through’ a separate plan for three wind turbines at Ballaman on the headland overlooking the bay which is under consideration by planners.

Commissioner Adrian Tinkler asked about the noise.

Ian Swindells, from Foraging Vintners, attended the meeting and was given permission to speak.

He said the noise would be a ‘whirl’ of 70 decibels each turbine, ‘equivalent to eight people talking when flat out,’ he said: ‘They can be painted any colour.’

Mr Tinkler asked about the danger to birds. Mr Swindells said one bird would be lost per turbine. They were less damaging because they are horizontal.

Barbara Guy proposed they support the proposal; she was seconded by Godfrey Egee.

l A separate application, PA 16/01171/D, for signage on warehouse doors, was also supported

Well that’s heat one completed in the 2016 Battle of the Bands at Amber in Douglas.

Congratulations go to The Clown Calls For War who won the first heat and go through to the final on Saturday, November 26.

Commiserations go to The Ian Thompson Band and Avenues.

We saw a great standard set from all three bands last weekend.

This Saturday night we move on to the second heat, when you’ll see hip hop supremo Han FX alongside singer-songwriter Matt Kelly and the metal beast that is The Fletcher Christian Mutiny.

Hip-hop, MC and live looping specialist Han FX is the creation of Keiran Hannifan, in more recent times seen in a different guise as part of the line-up for the very popular local reggae tinged outfit, Rusty Jam Revolution.

Matt Kelly is known through King Chiaullee, Strengyn, Hoodoo Nation and The Ballaghs, and his style and influences are rooted mainly toward more Celtic leanings.

He started writing and performing his own songs a little over a year ago will be showcasing these pieces on the night.

The Fletcher Christian Mutiny return to the Battle of the Bands once again as last year’s victors.

With the ranks made up by Nell Kneale and Justine Lewis on guitars, Stephen Quinn on drums, Keef Lawler on vocals and Andrew Cregeen on bass, the band entrench themselves in the heavier end of the spectrum and cite their influences along the lines of System Of A Down, Black Sabbath, In Flames and Metallica.

The doors open at 8pm, it’s free entry and the music kicks off at around 9.30pm.

For further information visit www.facebook.com/Amber-Bar-317692424912775/

Saturday also sees the second in the new Intimate Acoustic shows at St Ninian’s Church in Douglas.

This second event features Tommy Scott of 90’s indie heroes Space back in the island for the first time since their headline show at The Deep South Festival back in July.

With the likes of Female of the Species, Neighbourhood and Avenging Angels among others in their back catalogue, this will be an interesting, stripped down, acoustic take on the hugely well-known songs.

Also appearing will be Steven Nash of Maldune fame playing a number of tracks from his recently released debut solo album.

Alongside Steven will be Mike Giles and Steph Tomlinson of The Birds and the Beards. Expect a setlist full of covers that includes the likes of Sting, The Stereophonics, Kenny Loggins, Eric Carmen and Donna Summer among many others.

Tickets are priced £15 for adults, £8 for under 16s and over 65s and are available online from http://buytickets.at/ultimateproductions
