Johnny is honoured for brave rescue of young boy

A Douglas man who rescued a six-year-old boy from the sea last year has been recognised with an award for his bravery.

Johnny Glover, who is 24 and works for a builders’ merchant, has been honoured by the Royal Humane Society.

He was presented the award for his heroic and quick-thinking actions by Lieutenant Governor Sir Richard Gozney at a special ceremony at Government House in Onchan.

In July last year Johnny was enjoying Douglas carnival with his own children when a freak gust of wind carried a bouncy castle over the promenade railings and into the sea.

Two children were playing on the amusement at the time and although one managed to struggle to safety, the other, Liam Hansen from Onchan, was dumped in the water.

The 24-year-old bravely jumped into the sea and held Liam until they could be both pulled to safety.

Johnny, who was joined by his family at the award presentation, said he was delighted to receive an award.

Speaking at the time of the incident, he said his own son, then four, had been playing on the same attraction only moments earlier.

‘I don’t even remember running over, but the next thing I do remember is jumping in the water and holding on to this little lad.

‘I was still fully clothed so it was a bit of a struggle to keep us both afloat in the water. Then they threw us a life ring on a rope and pulled us out.’

‘I think the little boy was panicking a bit and he was asking about sharks in the water so I was able to reassure him,’ Johnny said.

Six-year-old Liam was taken to hospital for a check up but was later released none the worse for the experience.

After the event, Liam’s mother Clodagh Hansen thanked Johnny and said words cannot express how grateful she is.

Johnny also received a commendation from Chief Constable Gary Roberts and was nominated for an Isle of Man Newspapers Pride in Mann award, subsequently winning the local hero category.

He received his Pride in Mann award at a special presentation at the Claremont Hotel in Douglas.

The Royal Humane Society is a charity that grants awards for life-saving acts of bravery.

Awards may be granted to those who have put their own lives at risk to save or attempt to save someone else.

The society was founded in London in 1774 by two doctors and since then it has granted around 200,000 awards.

Isle of Man based company, GamesCo, will be promoting the Isle of Man and their latest computer games at the prestigious EGX Show later this month.

GamesCo’s attendance at September’s EGX show in Birmingham will be used to promote the beta launch of their new title Grimm: Dark Legacy and the upcoming release of JCB Mars Pioneer, the first game to use JCB’s brand.

Mark Robson, head of e-Gaming at the Department of Economic Development, said: ‘The development of gaming companies in the Isle of Man is exciting.

‘It covers a range of companies and opportunities for developers and creative talent.

‘The launch of these titles and GamesCo’s prominent position at EGX demonstrate what can be achieved when the Isle of Man’s public and private sector are able to work together effectively.

‘The DED wishes GamesCo every success at the show and we look forward to continuing to work with their team and similarly innovative companies in the future.’

GamesCo started in the Isle of Man in 2015 with the aim to establish an online computer games publishing business based on the use of iconic brands and film IPs.

Dave Mousley, director of GamesCo said: ‘These are the first computer games of any scale produced by an Isle of Man based company and our presence at the show is intended to showcase these new products.

Support from Isle of Man based investors and the Isle of Man Government have been absolutely vital in the production of these titles.

‘As a result, we will be promoting both our products and the supportive ecosystem of the Isle of Man at EGX.’

The EGX show at the NEC, Birminghamis hailed as the UK’s biggest ever games event and will run from September 22 to 25.

Another multi-millionaire has been created by a game in the online casino industry devised by island software giant Microgaming.

A lucky woman has claimed a prize of just shy of 8 million euros [more than £6.3 m] on the Mega Moolah game.

It has been hailed as the largest ever mobile jackpot win.

As with all wins on Microgaming’s progressive jackpot network the money, totalling 7,968,311 euros will be given to the player in a lump sum.

The woman is currently being identified only as D.P.

No details are being released about where she lives or even what country.

John Quinn, head of casino at Microgaming’s Circular Road, Douglas, headquarters, said: ‘With mobile gaming now accounting for almost half of all gameplay, it’s no surprise that we are seeing mega wins on this platform.

‘We are extremely proud to have the longest-standing and biggest progressive jackpot network in the market.

‘To now claim the largest ever mobile jackpot win is very pleasing.

‘On behalf of everyone at Microgaming, congratulations to D.P. on this mammoth mobile win.’

The previous mega pay-out on Microgaming’s progressive jackpot network was in June of this year, when Mega Moolah brought a €6,355,463.98 pay day to one lucky player.

Microgaming’s Mega Moolah was hit by a Zodiac Casino player playing on their mobile device on Sunday, August 28.

Emma Hall, promotions manager at Zodiac Casino, registered in Malta, said: ‘We are absolutely ecstatic to welcome our latest multimillionaire ‘D.P.’ to our Millionaire Winners Club, bringing our total count of instant millionaires to six across our member casinos.’

The Mega Moolah ‘slot’ game developed by Microgaming, is available to play network-wide on eGaming casinos offering Microgaming games.

Football: St John’s end Rushen’s unbeaten start

St John’s United brought Rushen United’s unbeaten start to this season’s Canada Life Premier League to an end with a 4-2 victory on Wednesday evening.

In front of a large crowd at Mullen-e-Cloie, the hosts got off to a flying start when new boy Daniel Corkill opened the scoring after only three minutes.

Defender Nathan Kelly then added a second by heading home an inviting through ball from striker Rhys Oates.

Midway through the half the Saints made it 3-0 when Andy Chadwick netted from close range.

Former Isle of Man FA cap Steve Riding then pulled one back for the visitors, before Corkill converted an Alex Holden cross to make 4-1 at the break.

The southerners looked the better side for periods of the second half but failed to create many clear-cut opportunities. The only goal of the half, in fact, was as a result of a Liam Cowin free-kick that completely deceived the home defence.

Fletcher wins round-Guernsey event

In his first off-Isle of Man event, Samuel Fletcher secured victory in the Guernsey Church to Church Walk at the weekend.

The event was celebrating its 80th anniversary and Fletcher was one of four walkers to make an early break, instigated by local brothers Stuart and Jason Le Noury and former winner Jim Ball of Steyning AC.

The Guernsey siblings set the pace on early short climbs away from the start on South Esplanade, closely tracked by Fletcher. After five miles the four were covered by 36 seconds.

At 10 miles, Stuart Le Noury led from Ball and Fletcher, but the Le Noury brothers both went through bad patches shortly afterwards. Approraching the 15-mile mark at Vale Church, Ball led by nine seconds from Fletcher.

The latter man then showed his strength and took control of the race to eventually win by five minutes, with Stuart Le Noury a similar margin down in third.

Manx Harriers athlete Sam completed the 19.4-mile undulating course in a time of 3hr 07min 45sec to become only the second male Manx winner of the event after Michael George in 2010 and 2012.

Many other walkers from the Isle of Man have contested the race in the past, including Vinny Lynch, Jock Waddington and Steve Partington.

Marie Jackson secured the women’s title in 2010 and 2011.

It has been an up and down season for Fletcher, who had high hopes for the Parish Walk after taking joint victory alongside Dave Walker in April’s 50km Firefighters Memorial Walk.

After holding a top-five position for most of the Parish, he was forced to withdraw with a hamstring injury after reaching approx 72 miles and retiring at Glen Mona.

Victory in the Guernsey Church to Church Walk was perfect preparation for the End to End Walk which takes place in a week on Sunday, September 18.

He was runner-up in 2015 and hopes to be among the leaders this year. Entries for the event are now closed.

Mystery of the Festival of Motorcycling

$

0

A LADY I know whose only interest in the TT and the Manx Grand Prix and nowadays the Festival of Motorcycling is avoiding the unwanted attention of visiting bikers by way of a collision with her car, has pointed out what is to her a mystery about last week’s racing.

She says on every race day, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, when there were lots of exciting things happening on the TT Course, most of the visiting bikers appeared to be taking no notice.

Nearly all their bikes were to be seen parked in front of the hotels in Douglas. In that case, she asks, where were they and what were they doing?

I can offer no solution to the mystery which, I can say, also happens during TT Week.

But there is a possible explanation in what a police spokesman said on Manx Radio last week.

He said the Festival of Motor Cycling had a different atmosphere from that of the TT. It was much more relaxed and easy-going.

Does this means on race days all the bikers were fast asleep in their hotel beds?

THE Manx Independent reported last week that a truck driver had been fined for having no insurance. The court was told that the defendant was ‘stopped by police driving a tipper truck on Shore Road, Gansey’,

The police were acting on a tip-off?

ANDREW Kerr-Phillips tells me that the Independent had a headline saying: ‘Men who shot dogs in the dock.’ Andrew says: ‘A serious lapse of court security surely, allowing people to shoot dogs in court.’

No, I think they did it in Douglas harbour.

THIS week’s crossword clue has come in from regular contributor Frank Bond. It was in the Yorkshire Post Magazine as follows: ‘House is up on island? On the contrary (7).’

In connection with crosswords Dave on the checkout at Winerite – yes, him again – says I omitted the answer to last week’s clue. All I can say is that I did include it in my copy. For those who didn’t get it themselves the answer was POSTMAN PAT.

Tuck in Castletown says the Examiner had an apartment in Douglas offered for rent with amenities which included a heated wardrobe.

At least it would keep you warm in the winter, as long as you didn’t mind standing up all the time.

MALAPROPISMS are coming in nicely thanks. The following was from a person wishing not to be named:

‘Dandara’s box has been opened.’

Last week I saw a van bearing the message: ‘Scissor Hounds. Mobile Dog Grooming.’

That gives you paws for thought.

FUNNIES File: The monthly magazine of the United Reformed Church said: ‘A pilot educational course is designed to enable funerals to become more satisfactory for both the deceased and the bereaved.’

They have to be dead right.

SIGNS. At an electricity company: ‘We could be delighted if you send in your payment on time. However, if you don’t, YOU will be de-lighted.’

Crossword answer: MANSION’

Tomorrow Manx National Heritage will host a free public lecture by Professor Michael Barnes on the Isle of Man’s collection of carved medieval runic crosses.

The lecture will focus on the inscriptions which give an insight into both the language and people responsible for raising the crosses.

Professor Barnes will be visiting with an international group of over 25 language experts, archaeologists and historians to study the runic crosses displayed at parish churches throughout the island.

The visit comes as a project to publish a study of all the Manx runic inscriptions nears completion.

Manx National Heritage field archaeologist Andrew Johnson said: ‘Most people on the Island have some familiarity with the superb collections of medieval stone crosses which are displayed in the ancient parish churches, and we can be proud that their significance reaches beyond our shores and attracts international scholarly investigation.

‘Manx National Heritage has been working with this group for several years towards the publication of a definitive academic study of the runic inscriptions, as part of a longer term project to secure the safety, enjoyment and understanding of the Manx carved stone crosses for the future.’

The public lecture, will take place on Friday, September 9, at iMuseum, Kingswood Grove, Douglas.

Doors open at 6pm for 6.15pm start. Admission is free, with donations welcome to the Manx Museum and National Trust, Isle of Man registered charity no. 603.

Fog causes travel misery for air passengers

$

Passengers have endured days of flight disruption as 48 hours of fog at Ronaldsway, the temporary closure of a runway at Gatwick and an air-side protest at London City caused havoc to services.

One mother travelling with five children including a 17-month-old told how she faced a nightmare journey home to the island after a week’s seaside holiday in Clacton, Essex.

Jo Olsen’s flight from Gatwick on Monday night was cancelled due to fog and the flight next day took off only to return to the London terminal when it couldn’t land at Ronaldsway.

She and daughter MaryJane, 16, son William, 14, and his best friend Junior, her six-year-old daughter Gracie-Mae and baby Alfie were due to fly back this morning (Thursday), a journey – if the plane lands – that will have taken them more than 60 hours to get home.

They were put up for the first night at hotel in Gatwick and were told there were only three seats left on the 8am flight the next day so they had to wait until the 4pm flight.

‘We took off, got to the island and circled around but then the captain came on saying we couldn’t land and we had to go back to Gatwick,’ she said.

Some passengers took up the option of being taken by coach to Liverpool to get the flight or ferry back to the island.

With five children in tow, Jo chose not to but with no hotels available near Gatwick, they had to travel to Hounslow for their overnight stay, not arriving until midnight.

Then they had to get a taxi back to Gatwick the next day for a third night in a hotel.

Jo, who lives in Ramsey, said: ‘EasyJet can’t be blamed for the weather but I can’t understand why some planes were landing but not ours. The kids were tired and hungry but they look at it as being a bit of an adventure.

‘The worst thing is the uncertainty. There was nowhere to buy nappies for Alfie. Fortunately I was able to buy some in the south terminal.’

On two occasions the group had to queue for 45 minutes to go back through passport control at Gatwick.

To compound problems for travellers, protesters from the Black Lives Matters group forced the closure of London City airport on Tuesday morning and on Sunday the main runway at Gatwick was closed after a ‘small indentation’ was discovered on its surface. It reopened later that evening.

Airport director Ann Reynolds said there had been 48 hours of fog with patches of visibility.

She said: ‘Some planes have been lucky and got in. But some flights have held for a while and then had to go back, while others have diverted to other airports.’ The Met Office had forecast fog at Ronaldsway until yesterday lunchtime.

Fire in chip shop

The fire service dealt with two incidents in the south of the island on Wednesday.

The chip shop on Maine Road, Port Erin, caught light at about 4.25pm.

Fire crews from Port Erin and Castletown were called and discovered thick black smoke and flames at the rear of the property’s flat roof.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus a hose reel and a thermal image camera to locate and fight the fire. Once the fire was put out a positive pressure fan cleared the smoke from the building

The fire was confined to the extraction system for the chip fryers and crews remained in attendance for about three hours cutting away the roofing materials around the final vent location on the flat roof, to remove all hot spots and make the building safe.

The fire service praised the quick actions of the chip shop owners and staff who on noticing the fire quickly isolated all services to the area, and evacuated all persons to safety.

They were also called to a house fire at Cronk Y Thatcher, Colby.

It confined to the oven which they extinguished with a carbon dioxide extinguisher.

eGaming is an island success story says Bell

Outgoing Chief Minister Allan Bell said today (Thursday) he hoped the new island government would be prepared to take risks and focus on opportunities for the future.

Mr Bell, who will shortly be stepping down from politics, was given a warm welcome at the opening of the KPMG eGaming Summitat the Villa Marina, Douglas.

He said he was proud of the success story of eGaming in the island which, as part of the wider ICT sector, is now a major force to be reckoned with.

He told movers and shakers in the eGaming world that the government faced similar challenges in the late 1990s.

Then, the relatively new concept of eGaming presented itself and ‘we thought it was something that might be worth exploring.

‘We assessed the risk and decided to go with it.

‘It is now a hugely successful industry.’

With a general election on the way later this month, and Mr Bell preparing to step down from the political arena he told the audience: ‘Government has to stay focused on the opportunities which will come and to develop those opportunities will have to be prepared to take risks.’

There will be more reports from the eGaming summit in Tuesday’s Business news in the Isle of Man Examiner
