Champions elect come from behind to beat bottom side Ayre 11-1
ST George’s returned to the top of the Canada Life Premier League on Wednesday night after an 11-1 win over bottom side Ayre under floodlights at St John’s FC’s Mullen-e-Cloie ground.
Geordies are now one point ahead of Laxey at the top of the standings, with two games in hand on their top-flight title rivals from Glen Road.
Like at the weekend Geordies had to come from behind with the already relegated Tangerines taking a shock lead when Lee Camilleri tapped in after just five minutes.
The goal sparked a good passage of play for the northerners as Geordies were frustrated by United keeper Andy Ball and his battling backline.
The Glencrutchery Road side finally found a way past Ball and the stubborn Ayre defence in the run up to the break, Ciaran McNulty hitting home his 33rd of the league season after Ball had repelled another St George’s attack.
McNulty then turned provider as Chris Bass Sr’s side finally got their noses in front, Liam Cowin forcing home his side’s second of the evening.
Sam Caine added a third just before the break when he intercepted an under-hit Ayre back pass to give Geordies a 3-1 advantage at the interval.
Geordies improved after half-time and Johnny Myers got the ball rolling when he rose like a salmon to power Cowin’s corner into the back of the net.
McNulty added his second of the fixture shortly after before Frank Jones headed in Liam Cowin’s cross to take the score to 6-1.
As Ayre tired more goals followed. An own goal made it seven before McNulty completed a his hat-trick to move two clear of St Mary’s Steven Priestnal in the race for the division’s Golden Boot.
Chris Bass Jr scored a rare right-footed goal for his side’s ninth before making it double figures after going through one-on-one with Ball.
Caine capped off a good performance with his second of the match to complete the scoring at 11-1.
Geordies are back in action in the Cu-Plas FA Cup final on Easter Monday afternoon against Union Mills. Kick-off is 3pm at the Bowl.
