Martina Sipos from Douglas made the ultimate sacrifice to support a friend with cancer recently when she decided to have her her cut off for charity.
Martina, who is 31 and lives at Robert Cubbon Close, decided to give the proceeds to Manx Cancer Help after her best friend Zuzana Budayova was diagnosed with cancer.
She has also donated the hair itself to a charity.
‘I thought I would like to donate my hair as well. So after the haircut - and after I had finished crying - I sent my hair to the Little Princesses’ Trust,’ she said.
The trust (www.littleprincesses.org.uk) can use the hair donated to it to make wigs for children who have lost their own hair as a result of cancer treatment.
Martina said she was aiming to raise £1,000 for Manx Cancer Help which supports cancer patients and their families, carers and friends with expert counselling to help them cope with their diagnosis.
‘I could see it being cut in the mirror, but it was in a good cause to support a friend so I didn’t mind,’ she said.
‘At first people told me not to do it because I had been growing my hair for four years.’
To help people to donate, Martina has set up a Just Giving donations page at www.justgiving.com/Martina-Sipos
