Peel based rock boys 3 Million are due to release their latest offering tonight (Friday).
A work of four tracks entitled the ‘Take It Or Leave It’ EP; it showcases what the boys have been up to while holed up in their rehearsal room in recent months.
Made up of band members Chris Honour (guitar and vocals), Gaz Smith (lead guitar), Joe Crookall (bass guitar) and Mathew Woods (drums), it seems they’ve been busy.
So, what does it sound like? Well, if you’re a fan of straight down the line, no nonsense, melodic, guitar driven rock tunes, then this is for you.
As with most bands, straight away you can pick out the influences. To me, it seems musically that the tunes are deeply rooted in the 90s’ decade. It’s not a new sound that you’ll hear here and that’s not a criticism, I actually like that.
The band harks back to a time of the Oasis, Stereophonics, Placebo and Shed Seven heyday among others.
It’s not always necessary to re-invent the wheel and this does exactly what it says on the tin.
The band will appear at The Rovers in Douglas tonight in support of the EP release.
Tomorrow (Saturday) sees 8 Bit Empire appearing at Jaks pub in Douglas. Their mission statement simply put is to play covers that no one else is playing and to breathe new life into playing covers gigs.
They decided that they wouldn’t cover a song if another band on the island gig circuit were known to be already playing it, unless they could really re-invent it.
You’ll never get a straightforward original cover version with 8 Bit. What you will get is a total re-working and possibly even a whole change of musical style. Rock, Pop and Indie covers are played in various different styles, including I hear, a fairly heavily riffed up, rock version of a certain famous Adele tune.
The line up includes Caitie Tate (lead vocals), Si Harvey (guitar and vocals), Phil Cleary (bass) and Brian Duffy (drums). For more about the band and to hear some audio examples from their set list visit www.8bitempire.co.uk
