Cup specialists Mills have top spot in their sights

DOUBLE cup finalists Union Mills are back in league action this weekend when they travel to Police aiming to maintain their JCK Division Two title challenge.

The Millers face a busy Easter weekend after booking their place in both the GH Corlett Woods Cup and Cu-Plas FA Cup finals in what is fast becoming a memorable season for the Garey Mooar outfit.

In the league table they currently lie second, just a point behind leaders Marown but crucially with a game in hand and will favourites to claim all three points on offer against a Police side in the botom half of the table.

Should the Millers slip up, Marown could increase the gap between the two sides when they travel to lowly Malew. The Crosby side seem to have overcome their mid-season blip and remain on course to gain promotion to the Premier League. They won the reverse fixture comfortably 4-0 thanks to goals from Ryan Holdaway, Richard Mulhern, Niall Quayle and Nigel Shimmin so expect a similar, if not greater, result this time around.

An interesting battle should develop at Balleira Road where Michael play host to Colby. A win for Barney Kelly’s men would end the southerners’ hopes of a top-four finish and move Michael a step closer to Gold Cup qualification.

However, Colby are currently on a 10-match unbeaten run in the league so will pose a considerable threat to the westerners. Indeed, the Stations Fields side’s last league defeat actually came at the hands of Michael way back in October so this one is too close to call.

Onchan face a potential banana skin in their quest for promotion and possibly even the title when they travel to Victoria Road to face Braddan.

The Os have been one of the teams of the season so far and could go level on points with Marown at the top should they win their two games in hand. However, Braddan can be a tricky side to go up against on their day and the Swans have already beaten the likes of Union Mills and even Castletown this season so this is certainly not going to be easy.

Foxdale - currently in seventh place but with games in hand - can keep alive their faint hopes of a top-four finish should they get the better of Douglas and District at Billy Goat Park while Woods Cup semi-finalists Pulrose will be favourites to beat bottom-of-the-table side Ronaldsway in the other remaining fixture.
