Peel residents came out in force against the proposed new ‘toilet tax’

A requisition meeting was held last night to discuss the controversial £50 levy, which will go before Tynwald next Tuesday.

Around 100 people attended the meeting, organised by Captain of the Parish John Kennaugh.

Chief Minister Allan Bell MHK, Water and Sewage Authority chief John Houghton MHK and Treasury Minister Eddie Teare MHK were all unable to attend, but politicians who were in attendance were Peel MHK Tim Crookall, Department of Social Care Minister Chris Robertshaw MHK and Michael MHK Alf Cannan.

A petition containing 300 signatures against the tax was presented to Mr Crookall before the meeting.

A motion at the end of the meeting saw a unanimous vote against the toilet tax, which Peel Commissioner Ian Davison and Jeff Birkett, who called the meeting, will relay to Tynwald.
