A director of Ramsey Warehouse in Parliament Street has revealed the extent of the flood damage to the premises could be in the region of £15,000-20,000.

Ramsey was one of the worst hit places when harbours overflowed on Friday, January 3, due to exceptionally high tides.

Parliament Street was like a stream with one man even taking to his kayak.

Ramsey Warehouse was one of the many businesses impacted by the floods and director Chris Blatcher has spoken of the damage done.

Chris said: ‘There has been about 110 square metres on the lower ground floor damaged. We’ve had to replace the flooring, slot walls and some fixtures.

‘The repairs are ongoing but it’s estimated it’ll be another three weeks before they’re completed.

‘We did only close for one day – the day of the flood – and were open again the next day, but obviously we had to fit stock in other areas.

‘It’s a ball park figure at the moment, but I’d estimate the cost of this could be around £15,000 to £20,000.’

There has been some criticism of the government for a lack of preparation for such a catastrophe, but Mr Blatcher has nothing but praise for its handling of the crisis.

‘The Department of Infrastructure has done a good job as far as I’m concerned, with the sandbags I think they did a sterling job in the difficult circumstances.

‘The thing is you can predict the flood and know how the tides are going to be well in advance, but the weather we had on top of that you can’t always predict so far in advance.’

Mr Blatcher praised the government’s clean up efforts too, saying: ‘The government bodies have put commercial skips on the quayside and Parliament Street so they couldn’t have done much more really.’
