Storm fazes some but not all at Rowany

IT was like a scene from Revelations as apocalyptic weather conditions swept over the golf course in the Haven Homes Winter League at Rowany over the weekend.

Anybody with half a brain would have decided that gale force winds and torrential rain would have been a good enough reason to stay indoors. However, this was not the case as the hardiest of hardy golfers ventured out to play for the precious points.

David Stacey and his partner Kevin O’Loughlin were matched against Paul Thomas and the golfing ‘autobot’ Marc Morley. Obviously the ballast issue came into operation with the strong wind and the lightweights were tossed away on the breeze with a 6 and 5 thrashing.

The extraordinarily talented golfer Tom Gandy took the money with two fabulous birdie twos.

This no doubt contributed to the win with Gary Gilbert over Henry Armstrong and Kev Corlett.

There has been some activity at the bottom of the table. There was a three-point gift from the Hattons to Icky Garrett and Mark Cooper, both brothers had treated themselves with a trip to Abu Dhabi to watch their beloved Pakistan cricket team - Guy and Juan will have been studying their heroes to pick up a few tips.

Sadly, the league was tarnished again with further controversy, the league leaders were handed three points with a ‘gimmee’ as the weather was deemed unfit by one player.

Albert Conlon was all set up in his oilskins but it was all to no avail and the Mundell/Wray combinations’ lead stretches again.

There has been some confusion over the Dad’s Army result too.

The ‘dodgy goals’ enquiry team will be sitting this weekend at the Rowany clubhouse to determine the facts.
