THE Isle of Man’s numbers at this summer’s much-discussed NatWest Island Games in Bermuda have been boosted by an unlikely source.
Dan Smith and Michael Travers will head out with rest of the Manx contingent in July to take part in the Games’ beach volleyball competition.
The pair are part of the recently formed Isle of Man Volleyball Club, but Smith has represented the island before in the indoor form of the sport at the 1997 and 2001 Games.
Coach Roberto Villani said: ‘This is great news for the Isle of Man Volleyball Club as it proves we are committed to the development of the sport and are willing to commit resources and personal time for this cause.’
‘Myself as coach and others will be preparing them physically and tactically for the event and it would be great if companies might consider helping them out with funding and sponsorship.’
The Isle of Man Games Association of Mann has confirmed its backing of the entry and the pair have stepped up their training regime, which will eventually see them utilising the beach volleyball nets at both Peel and Port Erin.
Travers explained: ‘We are training hard and hoping it pays off against some tough competition. Both of us are excited to be the island’s first representatives at beach volleyball and could be an outside bet for a podium position.’
The pair are seeking sponsorship to help fund the trip to the North Atlantic island. Anyone who thinks they can help should contact Dan or Mike by email at volleyballisleofman@manx.net
