THE 2012 HSBC Manx Youth Games was officially launched last week by Tim Crookall MHK.
Speaking at the launch event at the Douglas branch of HSBC, Mr Crookall said, ‘I am delighted to formally launch this fantastic event, which is without doubt one of the highlights of the Manx sporting calendar.’
In addition to the main competition, taking place on Saturday, May 19 at the NSC, the Youth Games programme consists of regular training sessions for each of the 11 sports which will be contested.
The sessions will commence around the island at the start of February, overseen by qualified coaches and open to all children aged between eight and 15 years old.
Representatives of the Department of Community Culture and Leisure’s Sports Development Unit are currently visiting all primary and secondary schools in the island to spread the word and give out training booklets containing information about the programme.
Kevin Cartledge, senior manager at HSBC, praised the huge effort which has helped the event to thrive.
‘The commitment and dedication of all the sports co-ordinators, coaches and volunteers who are involved in making this such a worthwhile initiative is outstanding.’
The 2012 HSBC Manx Youth Games will be the 11th edition of the event. Since its inception in 2002, over 12,000 children have participated.
