THE opening round of the 2013 Rentokil Manx Fell Running League takes place on New Year’s Day at St John’s.

The Supercards-sponsored Slieau Whallian race is one of the highlights in the fell running calendar and usually attracts a large entry. Although the race is very competitive, organising club, Manx Fell Runners, are keen to encourage as many novice runners as possible to have a go as the course is sporting but by no means over difficult.

Most people with a reasonable standard of fitness should be able to complete the 5km distance to the cairn and back. In keeping with the festive time of year, all competitors are invited to run in fancy dress.

For spectators, and there is usually a big turnout, the infamous Mullen-e-Cloie watersplash is the most popular spot. Every runner who takes an early bath in the freezing cold water is guaranteed a big cheer.

The start and finish is at St John’s United Football Club, with registration from 1pm until 1.45pm. The race starts at 2pm.

All entry fees will be donated to the Wish Upon a Dream charity.

Minimum age is 12 years.
