NEW Mount Murray captain Andy Nicholson got his year officially under way on Sunday with his drive-in, before members took to the course for the Corbridge’s winter league fifth round.
The captaincy certainly hasn’t effected Nicholson’s golf as, together with son Matt, he came second in Sunday’s daily competition with 44 points as they saw off the challenge of Chris Mitchell and Martin Wilson.
Winners on the day, though, were Chris Darnill and Richard Bray who scored an impressive 45 points in their victory over the strong pairing of Mike Pigott and Colin Anderson, while Steve Clague and Jonathan Evans claimed third with 43 scored in their win over John Belcher and Jason Clarke.
As for the league itself, only two teams still have 100 per cent records, Neil Cartwright and Richard Creamore who remain at the top after defeating Bob Love and Brian Kelly and Dave Dancox and Dennis Moore who move up to second after beating Andy James and Alex McAuley.
Paul Carson and Tim Calladine along with Alan Bannister and Craig Marr move up to third and fourth respectively after hard-earned wins, while Johan and Herman Loubser with Dave Simpson and Steve Smith are the only other unbeaten teams in the league, although they have played one match less and occupy fifth and sixth places. The full table can be found on the noticeboard in the locker room.
This weekend sees the usual individual stableford on Saturday, with round six of the winter league taking place on Sunday.
