THE Haven Homes Winter League 2012 ‘shot of the year’ has already been won by Big Trev Mundell thanks to an amazing effort at Rowany over the weekend.
When the 6’8” golfing giant stood on the first tee on Saturday morning, he had no idea that his initial shot would defy the rules of probability and give him a golfing experience that all of us can only dream about. The opening hole at Rowany is a par four – Mundell scored an amazing hole-in-one!
Following his usual breakfast of three bacon baps and a pasty, Big Trev arrived at Rowany and discussed tactics with his playing partner, Chris Wray. The league leaders planned how they were going to take on their opponents, Paul Thomas and Marc Morley. After a short limber-up with a few random practice swings, Mundell carefully teed up his Mount Murray range ball and hit the drive of his life. His shot sailed over the brow of the hill, heading towards the pin.
He knew it was a good strike but when he and his playing partners reached the green, they assumed the drive had gone too far over the back as there was no sign of his effort. The rough was searched to no avail and, as every golfer does, the hole was casually checked with that ultra feint hope the ball may have rested six inches below the surface. Mundell couldn’t believe his luck and saw that he had scored his first hole-in-one and, to put the icing on the cake, it was a par-four and hence a very rare albatross.
The effect of the wonder shot obviously had a dramatic effect on his game as the champions-elect could only manage a half. During the round, Trev was counting all fingers, thumbs and toes as he tried to calculate the sum of 64 x several drinks combinations. The Winter League faithful thank him for his generosity in celebrating this ‘millions to one’ achievement - well done Trev!
Positions in the league remain more or less the same, Dad’s Army taught the youngsters a lesson with a huge 9 and7 as Patrick Gandy and Robert Hester suffered the biggest loss of the season to Alan Tasker and Peter Addison.
Other notable results saw a win for Billy Newton and Tim Williams against Juan Hatton and his sub, Martin Young. It looks like Juan’s brother Guy has got a little fed up of his regular Winter League weekly defeat and has fled the country at short notice to go on a parrot safari in Africa. The bottom-of-the-table clash between Gary Gilbert/Tom Gandy v Mark Cooper/Graham Corlett finished up with an uneventful half.
