VAGABONDS RUFC’s women’s side continued their winning start to the new RFUW NC North One season with a hard-fought 14-15 win at Liverpool Collegiate on Saturday.

The home side made a strong start and the islanders did well to prevent Collegiate from scoring.

However, the Manx forwards were soon holding their own against the dominant home pack giving Rachel Clark and Lauren Ellison the opportunity to go close.

Vagas finally turned their pressure into points with only two minutes of the opening period to go when Tara Jackson crossed the whitewash to give the Manx side the lead.

In the second half some further hard work by the Vagas pack saw them get the ball out to the backs.

Fly half Abbie Corkish found a weakness in the oppositions’ defence and broke the line to score Vagas second try of the game under the posts.

An error from Vagas then led to the home team getting their first score on the board taking the the score to 7-10.

Vagabonds quickly switched back on and with 20 minutes left, a break by captain Alana McCaughan gave Jackson space to run the length of the pitch and score her second try of the game.

Collegiate tried to hit back and Vagabonds were forced to defend their try line for 15 minutes before finally losing the battle and conceding a second try and conversion.

With just one point in it and only minutes to go Vagas were determined not to make any more mistakes.

The full-time whistle was finally blown and a relieved Vagabonds side claimed their second consecutive victory of the season, placing them at the top of the fledgling league standings.
