In previous meetings whenever Peel and Colby have met, these encounters were often been close, well-contested affairs.

However, when Colby turned up with only seven players before kick-off on Sunday because of players being injured or off-island, with another two coming into the starting line-up shortly after the opening whistle, Peel were always going to end up victorious, finishing with a 14-1 scoreline.

Despite the scoreline, the southern club did themselves and the shirt proud, battling right up to the end.

Peel fielded a number of up-and-coming youngsters and one of them, Katie Meads, opened the scoring when she headed home Melissa McKnight’s corner.

Colby came close to equalising with a Courtney Goldsmith effort, however Peel pushed forward and started to make numerical advantage count, bagging their second with a wonderful Ellan Cleator free-kick that flew into the net from 25 yards.

Nicola Naden then made it 3-0 when she received Meads’ pass, turned a defender and fired it in with her left foot. Soon after she scored again, keeping her composure after beating the offside trap to place home.

Soon it was McKnight who got on the scoresheet, capitalising after Cleator’s effort was parried by the goalkeeper. Maxine Smalley then added her name to the tally after Kerry Beattie’s cross from the right was deflected into the Peel no7’s path to tap in a easy chance. Naden completed a first hat-trick when she reacted quickly after the goalkeeper had fumbled Smalley’s initial effort.

The hardy souls that travelled from the south did have something to cheer about after the break when Goldsmith drove in a shot to make it 7-1.

In reply, Bernadette Dunn tried an audacious chip that just went wide before Meads made it 8-1, tapping in after McKnight’s cross was spilled.

McKnight got on the scoresheet again with an effort that went in off the post for the westerners’ ninth. Naden netted the goal of the game when she struck home on the half-turn before netting again soon after, slotting into the net after the opposing goalkeeper kicked thin air.

Meads soon made it 12-1 with a smart finish at the far post before Naden completed her double hat-trick and Smalley drove in an angled effort to complete the scoring.

Colby finished the game with seven players when, shortly before full-time, Natalie Swales and Monika Gale were forced to withdraw through injury.
