Mystery of the Festival of Motorcycling

A LADY I know whose only interest in the TT and the Manx Grand Prix and nowadays the Festival of Motorcycling is avoiding the unwanted attention of visiting bikers by way of a collision with her car, has pointed out what is to her a mystery about last week’s racing.

She says on every race day, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, when there were lots of exciting things happening on the TT Course, most of the visiting bikers appeared to be taking no notice.

Nearly all their bikes were to be seen parked in front of the hotels in Douglas. In that case, she asks, where were they and what were they doing?

I can offer no solution to the mystery which, I can say, also happens during TT Week.

But there is a possible explanation in what a police spokesman said on Manx Radio last week.

He said the Festival of Motor Cycling had a different atmosphere from that of the TT. It was much more relaxed and easy-going.

Does this means on race days all the bikers were fast asleep in their hotel beds?

THE Manx Independent reported last week that a truck driver had been fined for having no insurance. The court was told that the defendant was ‘stopped by police driving a tipper truck on Shore Road, Gansey’,

The police were acting on a tip-off?

ANDREW Kerr-Phillips tells me that the Independent had a headline saying: ‘Men who shot dogs in the dock.’ Andrew says: ‘A serious lapse of court security surely, allowing people to shoot dogs in court.’

No, I think they did it in Douglas harbour.

THIS week’s crossword clue has come in from regular contributor Frank Bond. It was in the Yorkshire Post Magazine as follows: ‘House is up on island? On the contrary (7).’

In connection with crosswords Dave on the checkout at Winerite – yes, him again – says I omitted the answer to last week’s clue. All I can say is that I did include it in my copy. For those who didn’t get it themselves the answer was POSTMAN PAT.

Tuck in Castletown says the Examiner had an apartment in Douglas offered for rent with amenities which included a heated wardrobe.

At least it would keep you warm in the winter, as long as you didn’t mind standing up all the time.

MALAPROPISMS are coming in nicely thanks. The following was from a person wishing not to be named:

‘Dandara’s box has been opened.’

Last week I saw a van bearing the message: ‘Scissor Hounds. Mobile Dog Grooming.’

That gives you paws for thought.

FUNNIES File: The monthly magazine of the United Reformed Church said: ‘A pilot educational course is designed to enable funerals to become more satisfactory for both the deceased and the bereaved.’

They have to be dead right.

SIGNS. At an electricity company: ‘We could be delighted if you send in your payment on time. However, if you don’t, YOU will be de-lighted.’

Crossword answer: MANSION’
