NOT many people or businesses command the kind of unanimous respect as shown for the staff at Jane Callow’s Veterinary Practice in Bride.
Jane, with the rest of her family that help her run the business, is synonymous with selfless care and dedication to the animals she loves
It has led to a fitting nomination for best family business in the Flybe Pride in Mann awards. The practice is a true family effort, husband Dave Cormode (Callow is Jane’s maiden name) helps with the animals, and three daughters are involved, as a vet, animal nurse and accountant respectively.
It was Marion Craine of Douglas who wrote to the Examiner.
‘No matter what the problem is and whatever time of the day or night, or even Christmas, the animals always come first. I was 81 when my Scottie dog started needed injections every week. She would come to me so I wouldn’t have to travel. She looked after me as much as she looked after the dog.’
Marion’s daughter Joy added ‘Over the years I’ve had three dogs put down, but what Jane did to prolong each of their lives was amazing. When one of them was put down she cried herself, she knew him that well.

‘The animal always comes first, but she sees your pain too. She won’t let anything suffer, I’m proud to have her as a vet.’
Husband David recalls Jane setting up the practice from scratch 14 years ago, as she couldn’t find work anywhere else.
‘Jane puts her whole life into it. She’s talking about retiring, but I don’t think she’ll ever be able to give it up,’ said David.
‘She was born to look after animals, the money comes second, and it’s a poor second.’
He explained the clinic usually goes on to about 7pm, and then there are nearly always call-outs, normally about three or four between 9pm and 6am. Jane never turns them away, and is back at work at 7am each morning.
‘She’s very well thought of. Any praise she gets, she has definitely worked for it,’ said David. ‘I don’t know anyone who puts more of themselves into their work.’
