Peel Fisheries have expanded with a second shop opening on Peel promenade called ‘The Cod and Castle’.

Owner Dave Matthews took over the chip shop known as the ‘Top chippy’ on the corner of Church Street and Christian Road in November 2014.

The business has done so well that he and fiance Georgia Corrin have now opened a second shop which also serves cakes and cookies.

Dave, 31, has always lived in the island and has worked with fish and chips for more than 17 years. He previously managed the Terrace and Port Jack Chippy.

The new shop opened on Saturday and he said: ‘The opening was a great success. We have been overwhelmed by the support of the people in Peel.

‘Everyone has been very kind, adding good luck wishes or commenting on the appearance of the place. It is a real community town.

‘We decided to open another shop as we wanted to be on the promenade and have the luxury of looking over Peel bay. We felt that Peel, as a seaside town, needed a traditional fish and chip shop on its promenade.

‘We also wanted to feel part of the many great events that Peel has to offer such as the Carnival, Peel Day or Peel Soapbox Derby.’

Dave runs the shop with Georgia who is also a primary school teacher.

‘She will be helping out lots over the summer,’ he said.

‘The shop has been busy so far with lots of friends and family coming from all over the island to show their support alongside the Peel community.

‘We offer the option to sit in or takeaway which is different to the other fast food shops in Peel. We have also added a wider variety of fish to our menu. In the near future we are hoping to be able to serve a locally caught catch of the day. We are in discussions with our local fisherman.

‘We welcome customers in for just a cup of tea or coffee and a cake if they choose. We don’t want customers to feel obliged to buy chips.’

‘The Cod and Castle’ is opening during the summer from 11.30am until 9pm every day.
