The Steam Packet will operate additional freight sailings during the Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling to make more room for passengers.

MV Arrow will run extra services on peak days during the festival, which begins on August 20, allowing more space for fans to travel on Ben-my-Chree.

The decision has been taken due to further increases in demand to sail to the event, which offers a busy programme of two-wheel action including the Classic TT and Manx Grand Prix.

The number of motorcycles currently booked to travel is up 4 per cent when compared with the same date in 2015, while the figure for cars, vans and trailers has increased by more than 20%.

Overall passenger numbers are up 4,400, an increase of around 25 per cent on last year.

Steam Packet boss Mark Woodward said: ‘The Festival of Motorcycling format continues to prove popular with fans, with more and more people booking to travel every year.

‘We are committed to assisting the growth of tourism events, where possible, and have been able to respond to the increased demand only thanks to our substantial investment in the charter of MV Arrow.

‘Additional freight sailings on peak days will free up space on Ben-my-Chree to accommodate more fans who want to enjoy the excitement of watching the action and experiencing the atmosphere.’

He added: ‘We have been proud to sponsor one of the special events at the Classic TT every year since it began, and will continue our support in 2016 with details to be announced soon.’
