A fairground worker went on a drunken rampage, punching three people and headbutting an ambulance, after seeing a photo of his ex-girlfriend with another man on Facebook.

George William McGeown, of Dawson Close in Clywd, Prestatyn, was jailed for 12 weeks after knocking out one man and also trying to bite a police officer.

McGeown told police he had drunk 15 to 20 double measures before the incident outside Quids Inn on Loch promenade last Wednesday (June 1).

The 20-year-old had only arrived in the island on the Monday to work at the fairground for TT.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court how, at 10.59pm, McGeown was outside Quids Inn and said to be extremely drunk.

In an unprovoked attack he punched a stranger knocking him unconscious and then tried to vault over the barrier in the doorway of the pub.

He then punched the landlord and a woman bouncer before being restrained by members of the public.

Police arrived and McGeown was put in handcuffs and leg restraints but was still said to be extremely agitated.

He was carried to a police van by four officers but while inside was said to have been unresponsive and so had to be transferred to an ambulance.

But once inside he started to get angry and headbutted the side of the ambulance.

During the struggle to restrain him he was said to have tried to bite police officers.

Police eventually had to use Pava spray to restrain him but he continued his ranting once he reached the hospital, swearing and shouting ‘My name is George McGeown’.

The next day he was interviewed and said that he had limited recollection of events so he could not offer an account of the night.

He estimated that he had drunk 15 to 20 double measures.

Defence advocate Pamela Pringle said in court: ‘He is ashamed and embarrassed and wants to apologise to police and the hospital staff for his behaviour.

‘He had split up with his girlfriend of two and a half years and she posted a picture of her with another man on Facebook.

‘He was very upset and drank to excess. It doesn’t excuse what he did but is put forward as a bit of background.

‘Mr McGeown suffers from some mental health issues which he is treated for at home and has a heart condition.

‘He ensures me this will never happen again.’

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said: ‘15 to 20 doubles is excessive by anyone’s standard. I’m told you have a heart condition and mental health condition. ‘You’re very fortunate there wasn’t a more lasting impact.

‘Licensees are in a vulnerable position, they deserve and get the protection of the court. Immediate custody is necessary to send out a message to anyone who might feel the need to get so intoxicated they commit offences like this. People need to know if they commit this type of offence they will go to prison.’

The court heard that McGeown has one previous conviction, for battery, in the UK.

He was sentenced to 10 weeks custody for the assault which knocked out a man, and 12 weeks for each assault on the landlord and bouncer. All to run concurrently.

A five-year exclusion order banning McGeown from the island once his prison sentence is served was also imposed.
