Ryan Farquhar has been re-admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital.

The 40-year-old Dungannon ace, who was set to ride for Tyco BMW in this year’s TT, suffered chest and pelvic injuries when he crashed his own 650 Kawasaki in the first Supertwin race at the North West 200 on May 12.

Farquhar crashed at Black Hill when leading the race and was hit by following rider Dan Cooper, who injured a shoulder.

After being flown to Belfast by emergency helicopter, Farquhar was immediately operated on. His injuries included liver damage.

He had shown considerable improvement and was moved to a general ward last Wednesday. But on Friday his condition deteriorated again and he was readmitted to ICU. A Belfast Trust spokesman described him as ‘seriously ill’ on Sunday.

Belfast Newsletter quoted a close friend of Ryan’s as follows: ‘The news of his deterioration came out of the blue after he appeared to be bright and in good form in hospital just a few days ago.’

Ryan’s wife Karen and their two daughters, Mya and Keeley, had witnessed the 100mph accident on the big screens at the start and finish area, which showed him crashing out and then being run over by fellow Dan Cooper.

The accident occurred close to where Malachi Mitchell-Thomas lost his life a couple of days later in the second Supertwin event.
