A snorkelling trail is being developed off the south and west of the island.
Michelle Haywood, from Discover Diving, developed the idea after attending a conference in Ireland.
There she met a woman involved in Blueway, a network of water trails for snorkelling off the west coast of Ireland.
Michaelle Said: ‘It has underpinned a sector of tourism. So I thought: “We have sites as good as that”.’
Alongside the Department of Economic Development, she is now developing and promoting the trail which will cover eight sites: Castletown, Gansey Point, Port St Mary, Fleshwick Bay, Niarbyl, Port Soderick, Port Erin and Port Grenaugh.
Each site is self-guided and there will be information boards (measuring roughly 120cm by 80cm) to provide details of the trail. Michelle said: ‘We do not want to clutter the landscape.’
She said there was ‘a surge in interest in snorkelling’. Being a safe water-based activity, it appeals to families as well as individuals. She added: ‘Snorkelling is attracting family groups more. It’s like Centre Parcs without the glass dome.’
