The second round of the AXA Wealth International league match series took place at the NSC pool recently.
With many swimmers having spent the previous weekend competing at the Lancashire County Championships in Manchester’s 50m pool, it was a chance for them to return to the short course pool, writes Leonie Cooil.
It was also an opportunity for some of the younger swimmers to get their first taste of competition. There was a huge number of personal bests set across all age groups and events.
Alex Bregazzi won the open men’s 200m freestyle, with Joel Watterson and Josh Corteen following him home.
Emma Hodgson was the winner of the women’s event ahead of Kazia Whittaker and Grace Guthrie.
Alex also took the win in the 100m butterfly, beating his Samoa teammate Brody Hewison into second, with Joel third. Kazia was the winner in the women’s event with Grace second and Olivia Marshall third.
In the 50m freestyle Brody got the better of Alex, with Joel a close third while Emma won the women’s event ahead of Amy Kinley and Kazia.
Brody Hewison swam a strong 50m backstroke to win the 15-and-over event ahead of Joel Watterson and Peter Allen. Amy Kinley also looked strong as she won the women’s event. Kazia Whittaker finished second and Tara Mitchell third.
Euan MacMurchie and Josh Corteen had a very close race in 100m breaststroke, with Euan getting the touch while Peter Allen was third. Steph Brew was the convincing winner in the women’s event ahead of Anna Marcantoni and Cara Bregazzi.
Louis Peake was the winner of the 14-year-old boys 50m backstroke, with Matthew Humphrey finishing second and Fletcher Kneale third. Emma Hodgson won the girls event with Olivia Marshall second and Libbie Christian third.
Louis also won the 100m breaststroke, Matthew was again second and Dylan Sewell third. Isabelle Watterson won the girls event, with Olivia again in second and Hollie Glassey third.
Peel’s Jack Fairhurst was the winner of the 13-year-old boys 100m backstroke ahead of Jacob Corteen and Haydn Breed. Izabella Needham won the girls event with Philana Lunn second and Kate Watterson third.
Jack also won the 50m butterfly with Ben Grainger in second and Haydn third while Kate took the win in the girls event ahead of Philana and Cody Whittaker.
The 12-year-old boys 100m backstroke was won by Jim Dudley, ahead of Archie Callaghan and Ben Roberts. Lauren Batty won the girls event with Blae Richardson second and Chloe Heaton third.
Jim was also the winner of the 50m butterfly. Archie was again second and Davide Smithies was third. Blae got the win in the girls event ahead of Grace Pritchard, with Lauren in third.
The mixed 11-and-under 50m freestyle was won by Dixie Yardley-Scott of Ramseian. Panos Angelakis was second and Oisin Lynch was third. Panos was the winner of the 25m breaststroke with Matthew Buxton second and Connor Moughtin third.
In the 11-year-olds age group Magnus Kelly won the 100m freestyle. Joseph Humphrey was second and Jack Burgess third. Aimee Myers won the girls event ahead of Madeline Hemuss and Alise Batty.
Joseph won the 50m breaststroke with Jack in second and Nicholas Jenkins third. Madeline was the winner of the girls event with Aimee second and Catherine Perry third.
The 10-year-old boys 100m freestyle was won by Felix Peake of Douglas, with Adam Breward second. In the girls event the winner was Keira Heaton, Tomai Parry was second and Erin Corkill was third.
Ben Ellison won the 50m breaststroke ahead of Felix and Adam Breward. Molly Storrie of Southern won the girls event, with Keira second and Roo Hyett third.
The evening finished with the mixed 8x25m freestyle relay in which Southern were the victors, with Douglas second and Ramseian third.
The final results saw Douglas take the win on the evening, with Southern in second, Ramseian third and Peel fourth.
