Fantastic Golf Week at Howstrake

ANOTHER fantastic Golf Week came to a close at KEB over the weekend with the course in its best condition of the year.

The tireless work of head greenkeeper Brian Duggan and his staff is really starting to pay off and every visitor over the week would have enjoyed their trip to the club immensely – congratulations to everyone involved.

However, it was one of KEB’s talismen who enjoyed it more than anyone as Neil Cowie (13) powered his way to a win, another top-four finish, two nearest the pins and a two sweep.

This resulted in one of the most successful Golf Weeks for an individual player for some time.

Last year’s home captain in the IoM v Rest of the World clash started his charge in the Edward’s Restaurant Stableford.

Cowie’s 41 points gave him a slender victory over David Lovell (15) who finished a point adrift of the pace.

Visitor Lee Howland (15) was third with 38 ahead of Rick Faragher (3) who was a further point back in fourth.

Saturday’s Amanda Lowe Memorial Trophy saw the experienced Neil Taylor (6) storm to victory with 42 points thanks to a level-par 67 gross.

Birdies on the 3rd, 7th and 14th from the winner proved too much for runner-up Steve Gardner (10) who finished two points back.

However, his par-par finish was good enough to nudge Adrian Copley (7) down to third after the pair were separated on a countback.

Stuey Dewhurst (15) and Tam Dick (5) were also in the mix just a couple of points back.

The always-popular Golf & Leisure Am-Am was contested on Sunday and saw the evergreen team of John McMullan, Geoff Skillicorn, Neil Kinrade and Gary Moore scooping the prestigious title with a score of 121.

This was narrowly enough to beat another very experienced team of Mel Todd, Vic Sewell, Brian Shooter and Dave Dutton by just one shot while claiming the final podium position were Cowie, Martin Moore, Colin Igglesden and Emmet McQuilan.

Once again, many congratulations go to the club’s Scratch League team who did KEB proud with an epic 4-3 win over rivals Douglas on Monday night.

The result was the team’s second consecutive win and moved us up to sixth in the league table just a handful of points behind Rowany and still with a game in hand over a couple of sides.

The wins on the night came from Faragher and Ben Watson in the singles while the foursome pairings of Skillicorn/Ralph Sutcliffe and Chris Murphy/Mike Harrison also did the business.

Faragher will be hoping his side can make it a hat-trick of wins when the team welcome the in-form Peel to Onchan on Monday night – keep it going, guys.

Tomorrow (Saturday) it’s the Island Exhaust Systems Bowl followed by the Mark Taylor Memorial Trophy on Sunday.
