Dog walkers are warned to keep their pets away from highly toxic palm oil washed up on Port Erin beach.

The alarm was raised by Strand Veterinary Practice after one of its clients reported spotting a clump of the oil – which forms into white waxy-looking lumps - on the beach.

Dogs like to eat or lick the lumps of oil, but it is highly toxic and can cause vomiting and diarrhoea, severe illness or liver failure leading to death.

The practice said last year it treated several dogs who had become ill after ingesting palm oil washed up on the island’s beaches.

Symptoms to look out for are vomiting and diarrhoea and swift veterinary intervention is recommended.
