GALE force winds caused chaos around the island yesterday (Tuesday).

The Met Office, based at Ronaldsway, recorded a top gust of 71mph, while on the mountain winds reached 70mph and in Douglas the highest gust was 64mph.

Department of Infrastructure deputy civil engineering section manager Alan Hardinge said there were a lot of branches and debris on roads around the island.

From 3am, five highways crews were clearing fallen trees at the Hibernia, White Hoe and Patrick Road.

They also helped out at the new Dealz store, in Strand Street, Douglas, after one of the windows came out.

Passengers on the Steam Packet’s 1.45am Heysham-Douglas sailing endured a crossing of six hours and 20 minutes due to rough conditions in the Irish Sea.

The Ben-my-Chree was scheduled to arrive at 5.45am but didn’t dock until 8.05am.

A Steam Packet spokesman said: ‘As the Ben-my-Chree was approaching Douglas this morning, there was a sudden squall, gusting close to 60 knots (69mph).

‘The master opted to wait for the wind to moderate to ensure the safety of passengers, crew and vessel. Passengers on board were updated regularly.’

Tuesday’s morning and afternoon Steam Packet sailings were cancelled as the Met Office warned the wind could reach severe gale force nine.

Gales are forecast on Wednesday evening. Gusts of up to 60mph are expected.
