Wood is first round leader in Vets’ Cup

As promised, further local postal results are now available. The first round of the Veterans Cup took place recently and saw Laxey member John Wood open up a significant lead.

Wood returned an excellent three-card result of 98, 98, 99 for a total of 295 x 300. Richard Arthur (Sandsiders) claimed second spot with a consistent 97, 97, 97 = 291 while third place, with an equal result, went to Sulby shooter Barry Jones 97, 98, 96 = 291.

Remaining scores: 4, Mike Thompson (Castletown) 96, 97, 97 = 290; 5, Peter Quirk (Osborn Carpets Douglas) 96, 96, 98 = 290; 6, Bill Jones (Sandsiders) 97, 96, 96 = 289; 7, Kevin Quinn (Kirk Michael) 97, 94, 97 = 288; 8, Nick Brown (Osborn Carpets Douglas) 97, 95, 95 = 287; 9, Peter Webb (Sulby) 95, 94, 98 = 287; 10, Steve Callus (Sandsiders) 93, 96, 98 = 287.

All of the above have qualified for the final which will be held in the new year, date and venue to be announced. Please note: Brown, Webb and Callus are to attend early and will shoot-off prior to the final round at 7.45pm to decide the eighth and final position.

A further eight shooters submitted cards for this competition and the results were:

Charlie Kennish (Laxey) 96, 95, 95 = 286; Liz Jones (Sandsiders) 95, 95, 96 = 286; Lorrie Thompson (Castletown) 96, 95, 94 = 285; Tom Lord (Kirk Michael) 94, 97, 94 = 285; Judy Kee (Laxey) 93, 95, 96 = 284; Steve Gardner (Castletown) 95, 93, 95 = 283; Andrew Jessop (Laxey) 94, 94, 93 = 281; Paul Clague (Laxey) 89, 93, 96 = (278).

Kelly takes the lead in U21 champs

Port St Mary members dominated the top three positions of the Under-21 Championships, with Ben Kelly leading the way with an outstanding 99, 100 = 199 x 200. George Dalton-Brown is currently in second with 98, 94 = 192 and Harry Harrison completes the southern trio with 94, 97 = 191.

Sulby Cossacks youngster Jess Clague lies in fourth position after recording 94, 96 = 190 and with an equal score in fifth, is Port’s Ashley Gardner 95, 95 = 190. Tim Hardisty shooting for Sulby Cossacks holds sixth position with 91, 98 = 189 and in seventh is to Louise Coarse of Sandsiders on 96, 92 = 188.

Another Port St Mary shooter Jackie Gardner recorded 96, 91 = 187 while team-mate Sammie-Jo Watterson replicated her score on 96, 91 = 187 and two Sulby Cossacks’ shooters, Fergus Coulter with 90, 91 = 181 and James Castlelow on 81, 91 = 172, hold ninth and 10th place respectively.

Duncan Watterson (Castletown) recorded 73, 90 = 163 and Dan Simpson was the final shooter to submit two cards with 72, 83 = 155. Anthony Cawte (Sulby) unfortunately only submitted one card and scored 86.

With several excellent results, it is obvious that local shooting is in safe hands. Thanks must go to the individuals who dedicate their time and patience to the coaching and training of these youngsters.

Dates for your diaries

Monday, January 9 is the date of the Isle of Man Rifle Association’s Open Shoot where three different venues will be used. Sulby Club host Cossacks and Kirk Michael, Castletown is to be the venue for Port St Mary and Laxey and Osborn Carpets compete at Sandsiders.

Competition commences at 7.30pm with entries no later than 8.30pm

Monday, January 16 sees the association’s league matches recommence with Sulby at home to Castletown, Kirk Michael host Cossacks, Sandsiders are at home to Osborn Carpets Douglas and Port St Mary travel north to Laxey.
