Another Manx veteran of the Normandy landings has been presented with France’s highest honour.

Arthur Corkill, 90, received his Legion d’Honneur at the Anfield Manor residential home in Douglas.

Madame Annie Nédellec, French honorary consul, presented the medal in the presence of Lieutenant Governor Adam Wood.

Mr Corkill was conscripted into the Royal Navy in 1943 at the age of 18. During the Normandy landings, he was one of a four-man crew in charge of a landing craft used to bring troops ashore on Utah beach.

The first men they put ashore were American soldiers who went across the beach and cut the barbed wire.

He recalled: ‘I was astounded but very proud when I heard about the medal.’

He said many US troops had terrible sea-sickness during the Normandy landings and asked him why he didn’t suffer from it too. He told them it was because he was born in the Isle of Man.
