Mark Cavendish and Peter Kennaugh have been in the thick of the action so far during the 2015 Tour of Britain.

Kennaugh has produced a key supporting role within the Team Sky squad to help Italian team-mate Elia Viviani claim two stage victories, one of which was by a mere tyre width ahead of Cavendish.

After finishing 14th and 11th in the opening two stages, Kennaugh was unfortunately given a 20-second time penalty which dropped him down the general classification.

Despite that, Pete has managed to claw back some of that time and, after Wednesday’s stage, finds himself 29th in the GC heading into the final few stages, some 29 seconds behind leader Juan José Lobato from Spain.

Wednesday’s stage was a 217.4-kilometre Scottish affair from Edinburgh to Blyth which culminated in a sprint finish, after Kennaugh had worked tirelessly heading into the final few kilometres.

The stage was won by Cav’s Etixx Quick-Step team-mate Fernando Gaviria, the 21-year-old Colombian bursting past Andre Greipel in the closing metres to claim a memorable win as Cavendish celebrated just behind him.

The Manx Missile crossed the line in 13th, while Onchan resident and Team Sky rider Ben Swift was 16th and Kennaugh was 34th.

Swift has also been heavily involved in the ToB, previously picking up 16th, 37th and 35th places respectively as he too has been producing a key supporting role for Viviani.

Thursday’s stage heads from Prudhoe to Hartside Fell before Friday’s affair from Stoke-on-Trent to Nottingham, then a 227km trek from Fakenham to Ipswich. The 2015 Tour of Britain then ends on the streets of London on Sunday.
