A Baldrine woman will feature in a television documentary to be screened tomorrow (Sunday) night about animals and their offspring.

The programme, the first show in a three-part series called Animal Mums, shows the relationship between animals and their young and was filmed with Oxford Scientific Films.

Angie Goody, aged 40, qualified as a game ranger in 2014 while continuing to work as a farmer in the island. Since then, she has sold her livestock and rented her farm out in order to dedicate her life to conservation.

She has been working with wildlife at Kariega Game Reserve in South Africa and has even founded a charity in the island, Thandi’s Endangered Species Association, which fights the ongoing problem of poaching.

Three years ago endangered white rhino Thandi survived a horrific poaching attempt, which left her with a mutilated face and no horn.

Alongside vet Will Fowlds, Angie has been treating the remarkable rhino ever since.

Against all odds, in January this year, Thandi had a calf named Thembi, which means Hope. But having lost her horn, a significant element of self-defence in protecting herself and her baby, life will always be hard for the pair.

Angie said: ‘It was so wonderful to be able to show the crew the wonderful bond between mum and calf and to describe to them what Thandi looked like in 2012 compared to how she does now.

‘I know the story captivates everyone’s hearts.

She added: ‘My aim is to inspire more people to get out there and make a difference, especially being a female travelling everywhere on my own.

‘You don’t have to be a young school leaver to go and volunteer – I was 35 when I first went.’

Animal Mums will be shown on ITV at 7pm.
