The UK and Ireland amateur premiere of The Phantom of the Opera has smashed Gaiety box office record books.
By the final performance tomorrow (Saturday), more than 10,000 people will have watched the musical directed by John Cumberlidge that has been a huge hit at the Gaiety Theatre since August 14.
The company thanked residents and visitors alike who have helped secure a record attendance for the local show.
Ticket sales have been so high that for all 14 performances the amphitheatre has been opened and for the final week, the gallery has had to be opened.
It’s is only the fourth time this has ever happened for a local production.
Producer Matt James said: ‘This has been such a thrilling experience for everyone involved with Taylorian.
‘All the cast and crew have worked so hard and the reception from the public, both locals and visitors, has simply blown us away.
‘The number of people who have come to see the show has been amazing and, as always, it’s been a team effort from backstage right through to the front of house.’
Matt added: ‘We set ourselves very high standards and to be granted the licence to perform the world’s number one musical, having received the personal approval of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s team, has been the pinnacle.’
The cast includes David Artus in the title role alongside Emily Coates as Christine, Damian Kneale as Raoul, Kristene Sutcliffe as Carlotta and Mandy Griffin as Madame Giry.
Leading an 11-strong island orchestra is renowned West End musical director Kelvin Towse.
Gaiety audiences have been captivated by one of the greatest love stories of all time.
Each performance has received a standing ovation from the audience.
