POLICE are reminding the public to guard against thieves stealing heating oil, scrap metal and siphoning fuel out of cars and other vehicles.

Since police have targeted this type of crime, a number of arrests have been made.

Detective sergeant Gavin Callow said working areas such as building sites were often targeted by criminals during quieter holiday periods but police would be increasing their patrols to combat this.

‘In the past varied items such as vehicle fuel, heating oil, metal gates and even overhead electrical cables have been targeted,’ he said.

‘If you see something suspicious such as a van or car that does not normally frequent an area or just looks out of place, note the registration and let the police know.’

Any suspicious activity should be reported to police on 631212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
