Tributes have been paid to former Ramsey MHK Charles Cain who has died at the age of 77.

Mr Cain, who was Ramsey MHK between 1981 and 1986 and spent 13 years on the board of the town’s commissioners, died in Noble’s Hospital last Thursday after losing a brave battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

A requiem mass will be held on Thursday at 10am at Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Maughold in Ramsey.

Ramsey Commissioners chairman Captain Nigel Malpass said: ‘It was with great sadness that I received the news Professor Cain had passed away.

‘A prominent member of Ramsey’s business community, Charles Cain was first elected to the board in December 1976. He was an active long-serving member who sat on many committees where his wise counsel and expertise were greatly appreciated.

‘Additionally, for the 1979-1980 municipal year, he served as chairman of the board, a role to which he not only brought his customary diligence and commitment, but also his abiding pride in Ramsey, qualities that also distinguished his career as a Member of the House of Keys.

‘Professor Cain will be greatly missed and on behalf of Ramsey Town Commissioners I extend my deepest sympathy to his family at this sad time.’

Born in Peel in 1938, the son of Deemster James Arthur and Mary Cain, Charles Cain was educated at Marlborough College and King’s College, Cambridge. He had a career in banking in England and East Africa.

He was editor of Offshore Investment from 1994 and adjunct professor at St Thomas University in Miami, Florida.

Mr Cain leaves his wife Angela, sons James, Edward, Benjamin and Matthew, and five grandchildren.
