Three MLCs have announced they will not be standing for re-election in next month’s Legislative Council elections.
Alex Downie, Dudley Butt and Alan Crowe gave leaving speeches before the close of the Tynwald sitting last night.
Mr Downie was first elected as member of the House of Keys for Douglas West in 1991, and was re-elected 1996 and 2001. He became MLC in 2005, and was re-elected in 2010 with his five year term of office ending on February 28.
Former Detective Chief Inspector Mr Butt was elected to the LegCo in 2005.
Mr Crowe was elected as MHK for Douglas North in 1995. He was MLC from 1998-2003, and then returned to the upper house in 2007.
There are four seats up for grabs in the elections that will take place on Monday March 16 as Phil Braidwood’s term of office also ends on February 28.
Closing date for nominations is Friday February 27 at 4.30pm.
The elections could result in a by-election.
Douglas South MHK David Cretney has announced his intention to stand. Advocate Paul Beckett has been nominated by Lib Van leader Kate Beecroft.
Candidates need not themselves be current or former MHKs, but must have the support of 13 MHKs to be elected.
