Forget the trifling matter of the BAFTAs, the place to be last weekend was the Ascot Hotel, venue for the prestigious Hoggies awards.
The awards organised each year by Dr David Stevens are to recognise the hard work of volunteers, including not just members of the Hogg rescue service but supporters as well, which allows motorsport events to go ahead in the island.
The Hogg charity, founded by the Hogg family in memory of Phil Hogg, provides medical support for events like the TT, Manx Grand Prix, Classic TT, Southern 100 races, to name a few.
Opening proceedings with a volley of quick-fire jokes, Dr Stevens welcomed guests and told awards recipients: ‘It was never meant to be the Golden Globes. We don’t want any tearful acceptance speeches. Just collect your award and get on your way!’
First up was the National Award, for a UK supporter of Hogg Rescue. This went to Stuart Westbrook, founder of the Lancaster Emergency Mobile Medical Unit, organiser of the volunteers’ training weekend in Lancaster, as well as providing many other services.
Steve Crowe from the island’s ambulance service was the proud recipient of the Local award for the training and help he gives to Hogg Motorsport in dealing with major incidents. The Crew award went to Mark Corlett who is the DHSS paramedic advisor to Hogg Motorsport and also makes sure all the TT course and helicopter equipment is up to date and fit for purpose. Paul Hunt, who is still receiving treatment after an accident at the 33rd Milestone while acting as a travelling marshal at last year’s TT, received the Travelling Marshal’s award. This was collected on his behalf by chief travelling marshal Tony Duncan. Ian Corkill and the 4WD and Van Centre received a special award for providing a minibus free of charge and for giving free use of training space at the centre. Karen and Geoff Ennett received the fundraising award for raising nearly £7,000 every TT since 2009 by selling tea and cakes at Harold’s Wall, Gorse Lea.
The Donations award went to Pokestars who contributed £5,000 to equip a third Hogg ambulance. The donation was arranged by Hogg member Steve Kimber. A Very Special Award went to Elaine Brown, Rob Vine Fund administrator for nine years.
