Hundreds of people took part in a march through Parliament Street, Ramsey, on Saturday to protest against the threatened closure of the town’s main post office and to show their solidarity with counter staff whose jobs are under threat.

People gathered at the town hall at midday and marched through the street to the Courthouse, timing their arrival to coincide with half-day closing of the Post Office.

The march, which drew more than 300 people, was peaceful and largely good-humoured, but the underlying anger and frustration was evident from vocal outbursts of the anthem ‘We Shall Not Be Moved!’, the carrying of banners pillorying elected representatives and the wearing of badges with the slogan ‘Save the Heart of Ramsey’.

Both Ramsey MHKs – Chief Minister Allan Bell and Leonard Singer – and Michael MHK Alf Cannan were among the marchers.
