Third place Onchan lose to secure Premier League football for top two
DESPITE losing to Michael and Douglas Royal respectively, Marown and Union Mills sealed promotion to the Canada Life Premier League on Wednesday night.
The pairs’ defeats to the Paul Henry Gold Cup qualification-chasing duo was made irrelevant as third-place Onchan, the only side that could pip the two clubs to a top-two berth, were also beaten 5-2 at Pulrose thanks to goals from Callum Hutchinson (2), Barry English, Ben Cowin and Aaron Raby.
In the west Michael came from behind to beat Marown. Silver boot contender Juan Killip had given the Crosby outfit an early lead only for an own goal and a 40th-minute strike from Peter Fisher to secure the three points for the westerners. Royal are the only side that can deny Michael the division’s fourth Gold Cup spot after they beat in-form Union Mills 2-1 at Ballafletcher. Nicky Gerrard and Nick Smith’s side need to win both their remaining games against Police and Foxdale to pip to the Aces by a point.
Elsewhere in JCK Division Two, Foxdale warmed up for Sunday’s Hospital Cup tie with Ramsey with a 7-1 win over Braddan at Billy Goat Park. Jonny Padi netting the visitors’ only goal.
Douglas and District finished their season on a high with a 2-0 win over Police thanks to goals from Rob Jones and Richard Sparkes.
In the evening’s sole Canada Life Premier League game Ramsey secured ninth position thanks to a 6-3 victory over Gymns. On target for the northerners were Chris Duggan (2), Michael Fernandes, Kris Halsall, Jamie Moffatt and Matt Montgomery.
