A waste initiative has been launched aimed at making Braddan a shining example of what can be done to conserve and recycle our resources, and keep the island rubbish-free.

No Waste in Braddan, a joint initiative involving Braddan Commissioners and the Zero Waste Mann charity, was launched on Monday.

And it is hoped it will result in much more waste being recycled.

Commissioners chairman Andrew Jessopp said: ‘We’re really optimistic we can help people bring about significant changes in the coming year.

‘The pay-offs are multiple: less waste cluttering our landscape and bins, more money for the parish through profitable recycling, and increasing pride in our local environment.

‘Plus there’s the added benefit of, we hope, some fun - the Zero Waste Mann team aim to get people talking to one another, and to start some friendly competition in a number of locations.’

Plans for the year include film evenings, school visits, discussion evenings as well as a family challenge ‘Slim Your Bin’.

Households will be invited to assess their current recycling performance and see how big a change they can make.

Businesses will also be encouraged to implement cost-effective recycling and share tips with others.
