St George’s and Union Mills boost title ambitions on return to league action
GRAND Slam-chasing St George’s returned to the top of the Canada Life Premier League on Thursday evening with a 5-0 win over Rushen at Glencrutchery Road.
Just days after lifting the Cu-Plas FA Cup, Chris Bass Sr’s charges swept aside the 2010 champions thanks to an impressive first-half performance that saw them go 4-0 up through goals from Chris Bass Jr, Calum Morrissey (2) and Ciaran McNulty.
The fifth-place Spaniards improved after the break, but a Bass Jr wonder strike emphatically sealed the points for Geordies who have now strung together a sequence of 46 games unbeaten in the league.
In JCK Division Two, Union Mills moved to within a point of the league leaders after they beat fellow promotion hopefuls Onchan 0-4 at the Nivison Stadium.
The Millers bounced back from Monday’s FA Cup final defeat thanks to goals from Gareth Logan (2), Kenny Magee and Steven Quine.
The Kirby Estates Cowell Cup got under way on Thursday with good wins for Laxey, Peel and holders RYCOB. The latter, one of the pre-competition favourites, beat St John’s 3-0, while Jackson Brown, Robert McCowliff, Tom Hall and James Sealey scored as Laxey triumphed 2-4 at Colby.
Peel were the evening’s big winners beating Ramsey 9-0 with Daniel Corkill 3, Daniel Pickering 2, Ryan Burns, Louie Parmar, Sean Doyle and Nathan Pierce on target.
