A 17-year-old who hopes to pursue a career in medicine will set off this week for an eye-opening two-week work placement in India.

Elizaveta Tamarova, of Orchard View, Onchan, has signed up with global volunteering organisation Projects Abroad to spend two weeks working in a hospital in New Delhi as well as on outreach programmes.

Elizaveta, a King William’s College student, leaves the island on Saturday. As well as shadowing doctors of a busy multi-speciality hospital she will have the chance to experience 5,000 year old traditional Ayurvedic treatments,

She said: ‘There’s certainly plenty to be excited about, from the actual medical work experience itself to the culture shock I am bound to receive, as India is a different world to the west where I grew up and live.

‘I signed up as this would be an amazing opportunity, both to gain the vital work experience I need in order to understand what it takes to be a medical professional, as well as to experience an entirely different way of life.’

She admitted it was a big challenge, but she is keen to learn about Indian culture, differences in medical practice, as well as find out whether she can adapt to such a different environment.

Projects Abroad director Peter Slowe said: ‘India destination are looking forward very much to meeting her – they definitely want her to bring some pictures of Isle of Man with her.’
