The Department of Education and Children currently has no plans to develop a single all-island sixth-form facility, Minister Tim Crookall told Tynwald.
But secondary schools are looking at sixth-form provision to improve cost-effectiveness and increase the range of AS and A-Level subjects offered.
Under consideration is outside school hours teaching and shared teaching of minority subject A-Levels across more than one school or Isle of Man College.
Mr Crookall said historically, class sizes in minority subjects were as small as just two or three students: ‘This does not result in the best educational experience for the young people involved.
‘Schools therefore are currently exploring ways in which they can collaborate on the teaching of small number of minority subjects at A and AS Level, while maintaining a core provision in each school.’
Malew and Santon MHK Graham Cregeen said the current system was ‘not equal’. Castletown MHK Richard Ronan said a single sixth-form centre would be better for both students and staff.
