Quarterbridge A took on Team Bushy’s last week in the Douglas and District Darts League’s Men’s Knockout Cup final.
With the matches played as drawn, the impressive 4 x 140s thrown by Geoff Hurst of Bushy’s was just too much for the much-fancied Colin Tyrer of QB A.
The next match was a very tight affair between Paul Sertin of Bushy’s and the QB A captain Steve Moran.
With each player winning a leg apiece they battled out the final leg with Sertin clinching the double to put Bushy’s 2-0 up.
Next up for Bushy’s was the vastly experienced Robbie Cannell playing Steve Noon of QB A, who himself was just back this season after a lengthy layoff.
Cannell’s experience shone through with two very impressive 15-dart legs, the highlight being a 158 finish.
Up next was Bushy’s captain, the much-travelled Graham Smith, against Mike Connor of QB A.
Another tight game unfolded, with both men grabbing a leg each but it was Connor who persevered to take the match to finally put QB A on the scoresheet.
In the next match, Mike Smedley (Bushy’s) took the first leg against Lee Frearson (QB A) with an unorthodox double one, double 19 combination, much to the amusement of the watching supporters.
Frearson, however, managed to gather himself to take the next two legs to pull another match back for QB A.
Next up was the emerging young talent Tom Sertin (Bushy’s) against Rob Corrin (QB A).
After equal early exchanges Corrin took the match comfortably in the end making the score 3-3.
In the final singles match, Kevin Murphy (Bushy’s) came up against Will Coulter(QB A).
Both players took a leg each in a tight, but high-scoring game.
In the deciding leg, Coulter outscored Murphy to leave a winning double, but the pressure seemed to get to him allowing Murphy two darts to win the game.
Somehow Murphy missed and Coulter gathered himself to hit the winning double to put QB A 4-3 up going into the two doubles matches to decide the outcome of a now enthralling encounter.
The first doubles match paired Cannell and Smedley (Bushy’s) against Coulter and Connor (QB A).
In an equally high-scoring first leg from both teams, Coulter took out a 100 finish, to leave QB A only needing one more leg to win the Cup.
However, the Bushy’s pairing had other ideas with Cannell hitting a 120 to leave his partner double nine and, under immense pressure, Smedley stood up to the mark hitting the double with his first dart.
With some good early exchanges in the final leg, it really came down to the nitty gritty.
After Cannell scored a 121, Connor responded with a 136 to leave his partner a handy finish.
On this occasion Coulter revelled in the opportunity, closing out the double to win the match and the Knockout Cup for the QB A with a 5-3 winning scoreline.
Commiserations to a battling Team Bushy’s who fought hard all the way.
